Oncologist appointment tomorrow - what questions should I ask?

After being diagnosed on 18th January and going through all the various test, I finally get to see the oncologist tomorrow. Would like to hear from anyone who has any suggestions about what questions would be good to ask.

Also what are your experiences of how long it took for treatment to start after first oncology appointment. As my breast cancer is grade 3 and fast growing, I'm worried about it spreading, before my treatment even gets started.

Was it suggested you have a PICC line or port?

  • Thanks Rufusblue, sure they'll reassure me on Monday, need to calm myself down.Good luck on Friday. Hope your week is not too stressful. Xx

  • It is difficult to keep calm though,  I try to do some deep breathing whenever I'm feeling anxious and it does help a little.   My weeks are always stressful lol, 2 small grandchildren I look after on a Monday and Tuesday then work for the rest of the week but it keeps my mind off things,  good luck for Monday xx

  • I had a good night's sleep and feel so much calmer this morning. Think it was a bit of an off day yesterday, I just let my emotions get a bit out of control.Big day tomorrow so I need to stay positive and strong. I also have two gorgeous grandchildren, who I had hoped to visit last week. Unfortunately my granddaughter was ill, so I couldn't risk it. I've decided to isolate after chemo, until day 10, when I'm most vulnerable to infection, so won't see them now for a couple of weeks. Thank goodness technology enables us to facetime! Deep breathing does help with anxiety, I must try to do this more often. Sound like you keep busy, take care and keep in touch, would like to know how you're getting on. Xx

  • Perfectly understandable that you had an off day,  I can be fine one minute then an emotional wreck another,  all of us on this site understand,  I'm here if you need anything xx

  • Thank you, good luck with your scan results on Friday. Xx

  • Glad you are feeling a bit better today. I am thinking the trick is to plan positive things as much as you can even small ones. I have been out today and brought a V-shaped pillow as I am hoping that will help with sleep as I have been Achy since the biopsy. I have 12 year old and 8 year old daughters so we have done some baking today and painter our toe nails

  • Hi MadhatterC, good to hear you are having a lovely day doing something nice with your children. I've just been to visit my elderly parents. Wanted to take my mum her mother's day present, as I won't be able to visit next week. I have decided to isolate for first 10 days after chemo, apparently this is when I'm most vulnerable to infection. Good luck with your appointments next week, hope you get some idea of when your treatment will start. Xx

Seems like a good plan to isolate for 10 days and cannot agree more the wonder of technology these days is priceless.  After Monday you will be one step closer to your goal and no doubt the nerves of not knowing what to expect despite all the advice they give you will subside a bit.   I'll be thinking of you tomorrow

take care and best of luck for round 1

  • Hi Pippin,

The waiting time is nearly over, at last - I'm sure that you'll be glad to start chemo. It sounds as if you are all prepared. Have you got plenty of reading material to take with you? I am keeping my fingers crossed for you that it works well and that you'll soon have it all behind you. I shall be thinking of you, as you start your journey tomorrow.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thank you so much Jolamine and yes I'm all prepared. Have my kindle and earphones to listen to music. Feeling calm today and ready to fight this thing. You and others on this site have been a great support. Xx
