Anxiety while waiting for ct scan results

Had my ct scan yesterday and knew this would make me anxious. I've got tenderness high in my stomach, just under breast bone ( have had this at various times before diagnosis as well ). Obviously now stressing that cancer has spread to my stomach. First told I had two lumps in breast that were cancer. Then mri showed cancer cells in tissue between the lumps. Also in one lymph node. I'm dreading next appointment will be more bad news. I really need to try and find ways to stay more positive, but find it so difficult. This is obviously affecting my sleeping pattern which doesn't help!

  • Hi Pippin

It is only natural that you are stressed, whilst waiting for yet more results.  The pain in your stomach may well be caused by the stress that you have been under recently.  Even if you dont suffer from the classic indigestion symptoms, stress can cause acid stomach, which in turn then causes a sore stomach in the place you have said.  I developed this many years ago and it flares up again each time I go through a stressful period of my life.  The doctor told me to take Gaviscon Advance liquid (you can buy it in most supermarkets) after meals and before bed.  If that doesnt sort it, your gp will be able to prescribe a PPI like Omeprazole for a month or so, to calm things down.

I hope that you soon get the results from your CT scan and that it shows that it has not spread anywhere else.

    Regards

  • Thank you so much Annie, for taking the time to reply, it's really reassuring. You are probably right about it being stress, just so nervous about getting results. After mri I was told that I have cancer cells in area between the two lumps, not sure I can face any more bad news.

  • Unfortunately until you get your results and treatment starts, it is natural to think the worse with every ache and pain, that normally you wouldnt think twice about.  That is human nature.

I hope that you get your results soon, it may be worth talking to your gp anyway, once acid reflux starts up, it doesnt usually settle down by itself.  You have got a rough few months ahead of you, you dont need a sore stomach on top of everything else!

  • Thank you, will take your advice. Managed to relax a bit this afternoon and feel much better. Just a little reassurance from someone else helps so much. Xx
