Cervical cancer - stage 2

Hi, I found out yesterday I have cervical cancer stage 2A and even though I was certain I was going to get told I had cancer, actually hearing it made me feel numb and upset. I'm mostly ok but feeling a bit all over the place.

They're having their MDT meeting next week Friday so I should hear from them the week after about a treatment plan but it's looking like chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

What's been the hardest is telling my family, it's been difficult keeping it together and I've come to realise this diagnosis really affects my family too. The men in my family (my husband, my dad and my brother) were particularly shook when I told them, well my husband was with me when I got the news. Now will just take it one day at a time, try to remain as positive as possible and just get through it x

  • Hello,

I had stage 2A cervical cancer in 2012. If you would like to ask me any questions, please feel free.

  • Hi LauraP,

Sorry to hear you went through that and thank you for reaching out. Did everything go well with your treatment?

I had my hospital appointment 4 days ago to find out my treatment plan (after they had their MDT meeting) and was told by this doctor that she disagrees with the stage 2A diagnosis and believes it's stage 1. I was surprised and never thought I'd be so happy to hear I have stage 1 cancer lol. She said I'd need to have a minor surgery where they'd do a cone biopsy and have a bit of a look around and that will confirm the stage and if it is stage 1 then the next step is a hysterectomy, either simple or radical depending on if it's 1A1 or 1A2.

So I had the surgery yesterday (yes they were quick) and it went well. My next appointment is at the end of the month to find out and go through next steps.

Feeling quite good right now as, even though a hysterectomy is a major operation with a long recovery time, I'd much rather that than going through chemoradiation. It's weird cause in my head I've been preparing myself for chemo and there's still a small small chance it's stage 2 so don't want to get too happy.

  • Hi, sorry for the delay in responding, I'm not getting notifications when someone responds. My chemo/radiation went well, just tired me out a lot. I hope you are able to just have the surgery (I was not a candidate for surgery at the time of my diagnosis).

  • Hi LauraP, glad the chemoradiation went well.

I had my 'next steps' hospital appointment on Monday and they said the cone biopsy went well. They said it's stage 1A2 and the treatment is surgery so I have a hysterectomy scheduled in 3 weeks and that's it.

  • That's great news! Keep us posted on how you do.

  • Hi, I was wondering how you were?

How did the surgery go and if you are OK xx

  • Hi Nabgal81,

So I had the hysterectomy just over 2 months ago and it was successful. I can now say I'm cancer free. I was scheduled to have keyhole surgery but 3 days before they called me in and recommended open surgery so that's what I went for. I didn't have the best time in hospital though the nurses were great. I had to stay an extra night so 3 in total. If I'm honest, the first 4 days I felt pretty awful and the pain was worse than I thought it would be but everyone is different. As soon as I got home I started to feel better though. I've just started to ease back into work a few days ago as I have to move around quite a bit for my job, I think I would've gone back after 8 weeks if I had an office job. The scar has healed really nicely. The last 2 weeks have really been a turnaround as I'm feeling much more like myself again. My tummy seems to be a bit big/bloated although I've read that it can take a while to go down, I'm hoping that's the reason and not this period of inactivity and mum's cooking lol. And there's a numbness to my tummy on the right side down to the top of my leg which feels weird but is normal due to cut nerve endings.

So long story short, yes I'm ok :)

    Thanks for checking in xx
