Bowel Cancer- my husband

My husband had symptoms for 6 months and then a DVT in his leg which was investigated. They’ve found a very angry mass in his bowel. Now they’ve done a CT and a full body MRI. We are so worried it’s spread but have to wait until 8th January for the surgical team appointment. We tried to enjoy Xmas but now that’s over it feels like being on death row just waiting to be told what stage he’s at, has it spread, what are his chances. We have 6 kids between us and I am heartbroken

  • Hello sarahlou81,

I am so sorry to hear that a very angry mass was found in your husband's bowel - it's good that they have done the CT scan and full body MRI and I hope that you will get the results soon. It won't be too long now until the 8th of January but until then time can seem to pass really slowly and a week can easily feel like a month. It's normal to be worried that it has spread but try not to anticipate the worst if you can and to keep distracted this week doing things you enjoy if you can. There are helpful tips on this page to help you cope while waiting for important news. I hope that, despite what you are going through at the moment, you have a lovely evening tonight to wave goodbye to 2023. I can imagine enjoying Christmas was not easy for you this year and I hope that you still managed to have a nice time with your husband and your family.

While you are waiting to find out more, I thought I would share with you our information page on bowel cancer which I hope you will find useful and if you have any questions or there is anything you would like to talk through, feel free to give our nurses a call on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their helpline is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm. The helpline is closed though at the moment over the festive break and will reopen at 9am on the 2nd of January so don't hesitate to give them a call then.

You've come to the right place to reach out to others who have been diagnosed with bowel cancer and I hope that you will soon be talking here to others who have had a bowel cancer diagnosis. You can search the forum for past relevant threads typing keywords such as 'bowel cancer' in our search function at the top. I had a little look for you and found, for example,  's Bowel Cancer thread and  is another member who has been recently diagnosed and you can read her thread here. There are many others too who I hope will see your post and respond shortly with their own thoughts and experiences.

We're thinking of you during this difficult time - it must be hard for you and your husband to be merry at the moment and enjoy this festive break and I wanted you to know you are not alone as so many members of our community can relate to what you are currently going through. All my best wishes for 2024 - I hope that you get some clarity soon and a successful treatment plan is in place.

    Best wishes,
