  • Hello woodywood1

I'm sorry to hear that your husband was diagnosed with prostate cancer earlier this week and that there's a possibility that it may be spread to his bones. It's understandably a worrying and difficult time for you both as you wait for more news.

I know that we have previously had gentlemen here on the forum who have had metastatic prostate cancer that has been well managed with treatment. Unfortunately, I don't think we currently have any gents, or their partners, who are in the same situation as yourselves.

This period of uncertainty and waiting for further results and treatment options is difficult for many people. It can help to talk things through with someone and I wonder if you, or your husband, might find it beneficial to chat with one of our team of nurses. I'm sure they will be happy to offer any advice, information, and support they can along with helping you both think about questions that you might want to ask the specialists. If you'd like to chat with them they are available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

I also wanted to let you know about a charity called Prostate Cancer UK. They have an online community but they also offer a one-to-one support service where they try to connect volunteers who have personal experience of prostate cancer with others who are looking for support. This also might be helpful.

I know this is a difficult time woodywood1. Try to remain positive and steer clear of searching the internet for answers. Hopefully you will have some more clarity from the specialists soon.

Do keep in touch and let us know how you're both doing.

    Best wishes,

  • Thank you so much for your reply means alot my husband is having a bone scan on friday 15/12/23 i just dont get it he is 56 fit as a fiddle with no pain or anything just dont understand how this can be happening x

  • Hi, sorry to hear your story. My husband has the same. Was diagnosed in Feb 2022. Had felt unwell since Nov 21. Had already spread to the bones when diagnosed. I am here if you want to ask me any questions

  • Hi, my father was diagnosed 3 days ago and has his bone scan tomorrow so in the same boat unfortunately. Have you been given any timescales for results from the bone scan?

  • Hi Grace my husband has a bone scan tomorrow but said 2 weeks for the results have they said you dad's is advanced is he on any treatment xx

  • Hi. Just had the bone scan and told 10 days for results. He has also now got a CT scan for tomorrow. Not sure if he has been told it is advanced or not but he is being fast tracked so he may just not have relayed that piece of information to me. His PSA was 490 if that helps? X

  • Thank you so much for your reply if you don't mind me asking hun what was his PSA level when he was diagnosed how is your hubby doing now I have lots of questions xxx

  • Wow that's pretty much half of what my hubby's level is my husbands level is 778 how is your dad doing hun xx

  • He is ok thank you. Preparing for the worst but hoping for the best. The waiting is the hardest thing. My dad has unfortunately had cancer previously, bladder cancer 4 years ago so we have been through this before. So far the NHS have been fantastic and everything seems to be moving very quickly x

  • Hi.  Just thought I’d share my situation. Like your husband I had no pain.  It was purely following my own request for a ‘Health check’ in Sept 2023, during which I asked the nurse to include a PSA test - my PSA reading was 310. I have my own doctor issue with this discovery as I was refused a PSA in Sept 2022, at a time when PSA’s were being recommended for men over 50.

Following this result, and at a hospital Oncology appointment, I was diagnosed with Metastatic Prostate Cancer which was followed by CT and Bone scans.  It was subsequently confirmed that the cancer had spread throughout my bone skeleton including ribs and spine. It is now December and having started treatment with 14 days of Bicalutamide (Androgen Deprivation Therapy) as an initial hormone suppressant, this was followed by an injection of Decapeptyl good for 30 days - since followed by one of 90 days, with another to follow in January. I was given 3 months form the initial confirmed diagnosis in October to decide on the next treatment option.  On the assumption that I am currently ‘prostrate sensitive’ there were four more advanced drug choices that have been in the treatment market since 2010.

No doubt you will research the internet as I have done, with both the Cancer Institute in the USA and Canada having some excellent coverage. Your husband ( along with yourself but let him make it first ) will clearly make his own decision on what he considers the best course of treatment.  But from my own standpoint the most recent advance in treatment appears to be Darolutamide ( formally approved in 2022 ) along with Docetaxel (Chemotherapy) whilst continuing with ADT, with this providing the longest survival rate ( also seen as the best option by my own Clinical Oncologist )

I hope you find this useful information.  I would also be interested to know how your husband’s treatment progresses.  Get back to me if you have any questions on the above.
