Thyroidectomy

Hi everyone,   I have recently been diagnosed with a nodule on the right side of my thyroid, and am having half of my thyroid removed despite the FNA results being inconclusive (meaning it might not be cancer).

I'm finding it difficult to talk to people about it because I feel slightly like a fraud! I don't want to make it seem like it's a big deal for it to then (hopefully) not be cancer, as that would cause them unnecessary stress. However I'm stressed myself about the surgery and am struggling to come to terms with it, especially the recovery side of it. I was wondering if anyone had any tips for dealing with the surgery before having a definite cancer diagnosis.

  • Hi there , any surgery is scary without there being a possibility of finding cancer . Please don’t feel a fraud . I don’t know enough about this type of surgery to comment , but you can get more information from the nurse practitioner for that field. Just keep busy …., Maggie’s centres are very helpful if you need to talk things through . Wishing you all the best x

  • Hi .had the whole thyroid removed  8 weeks ago due to  Graves disease . Recovery was in my case a bit slower than I expected ,but I am back to work now ,still tight throat but improving . After surgery findings were rather totally unexpected 2 small cancerous nodules that I had no idea about.

I still can't talk about it, feels overwhelming and shocking ,only very few people know . I wouldn't take chances to be honest if I was in your place. Maybe is not cancer and God what a relief, but if it is ?

Good luck with everything and don't feel guilty for anything.
