How do you do the "waiting game"?

Yesterday when I heard the news, after my biopsy was taken, that on a scale of 1-5 they gave me a 4 for a probability that I had cancer I was really pragmatic and wanted to discuss all the possible options with the breast cancer nurse.  Today I just feel physically sick and on the brink of having a melt down.

What hints do you have to distract yourself.  I have a 2-3 week wait for confirmation of the results.

Any advice appreciated.

Thank you.

  • Hi , I’m sorry that you are facing this. The wait is awful, and I empathise . My advice would just be to keep yourself as busy as you can , go out every day in the fresh air ,go for walks in fields or by the sea if you can. Be kind to yourself , treat yourself to a new lipstick or book ! I also found it useful to write down my feelings . There are helplines out there if you need a chat or feel overwhelmed and Maggie’s  can be a great support  too. I wish you well .

  • Thank you, walks are something I do daily as I have four lurchers. Also a dog trainer. I will get stuck into some CPL, more knowledge is always good. Just wish the weather would improve, the moors i the rain is not exactly fun.

  • No one should give any kind of diagnosis before results are received. I am so sorry this has happened to you. Walking with the dogs is a good thing to do, and keep looking on here because there is always someone here to say "we give support to you".

  • I'm also playing the waiting game :(

Spending time  with my dogs is really helping me.

My appointment not til August 7th :(

  • Nettie & clastegra

big hugs both I would only echo what the others have said keep as busy as you can good luck both

here to chat anytime love Lara xxx

  • Thanks Mary, but to be honest since its a "one stop" clinic if there is nothing to worry about you walk out on the day with your results so if you end up having a biopsy you know there is concern.  I was a bit surprised by the fact they have a scale of how likely it is they think it is a cancer.  One day at a time, I guess.

  • Its really hard, that is a long time to wait. I got my appointment to the One Stop breast clinic a week after after seeing my GP and now the wait for the results of the biopsy which will take 2-3 weeks apparently.  Dogs are great medicine though.

  • Sorry you find yourself here. One day at a time is a good approach I think.

I think the scale thing is normal, but maybe seldom verbalised unless requested. Certainly the clinic here gave me a point on each of three scales of 1-5 for palpable, mammogram and ultrasound. Regrettably I was a 5,4,5.

    Sending best wishes x

  • Mine was not palpable, no sure if it showed up on the mammogram and definitely showed on the ultrasound. I broke my ribs about 8 weeks ago, looked at the NHS site which said nothing could be done and if you didn't have serious breathing, vomiting or blood issues then there was nothing that could be done and to take pain killers.  After a couple of weeks I was constantly feeling nauseous so went to the local nurse led minor injuries clinic, she wasn't that happy with my lung expansion (hurt to take deep breaths) so asked me to go to A&E for a chest xray.  I don't quite know why the doctor at A&E wasn't happy with the xray but he ordered a full chest and abdomen CT scan. The radiologist highlighted a possible fibroadenoma (seems he was wrong about what it was) and advised getting it checked out.  If I hadn't gone to A&E I wouldn't be any the wiser currently.  Don't think my mammogram screening is due for another 6 months.

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

  • Hi,

Telling you that was very unprofessional, you are well within your rights to make a formal complaint. I’m pretty sure it wasn’t a doctor who talked such nonsense.

The vast majority of cancer test referrals end in a negative result. That’s because “query cancer?” referrals are made if the referring clinician thinks there is as little as a 5% chance that the presenting symptoms may indicate cancer.

There is literally no way of knowing a biopsy is cancerous without testing it and examining it under a powerful microscope. Anyone who tells you otherwise risks being struck off no matter how “experienced” they think they are.

Waiting for results is stressful enough without that sort of uninfomed nonsense echoing around your head.

I agree with everyone else that dogs are a great distraction.

    Good luck!
