Tonsil cancer & 1 lymph node. 2 days till treatment starts.

Hi everyone,

In April this year i was diagnosed with Tonsil cancer & spread to 1 lymph node.this was a total shock, I'm non smoker, non drinker, 48 years old.

My head has been all over the place, just pure disbelief.  Im 2 days away from starting my treatment.  To say I'm frightened is an understatement, ive already been through so much since my first appointment in Feb (id never had an operation or been hospitalised before this point, so found everything quite traumatic, a blood test was huge to me before this but kind of a walk in the park now ) I had double tonsilectomy  in April then 3 weeks ago I had dental work in prep for radiotherapy.  Lots of scans & tests, hospital have been so speedy & thorough.

Just a bit of back ground, I have a husband and 2 children (12 &14)  they have been amazing.  Were very open with the kids. They are aware of everything.  Their school is very supportive.  Im so lucky with my work & friends/family.  So much love & support.  Ultimately this job is down to one person-ME!!! Its very daunting.  I've read so many stories on here and have taken some very valuable info.  I will try my hardest to take each day at a time & claw myself through to the end of my treatment then allow myself to move into recovery stage, however long that may be.  Im hoping by nov/dec (although I will still be recovering) I will get the"all clear"  my shining light at the end of my tunnel.

I'd love to hear from anyone wanting to share this journey or offering help/support.  Its a very lonely time even with all the support I have.

Sending love to you all.

Here's to positivity, allowing us to push through on the hardest days, always knowing the sun will rise tomorrow as will we !!!!!

  • My brother was diagnosed with tonsil cancer several months ago. He's further on the journey than you are, having had the blood tests, dental work and recently finished radio therapy. He has found two things particularly difficult; the mask he had to wear whilst having the various scans (MRI/CT) and the fact that the radiotherapy left him unable to eat/drink without a peg feed. His oncologist has said that he will return to eating sold foods but it can take a very long time. He has also found the mental side challenging in that recovery is very slow.

The positive news is that he was told that this cancer is hard to treat because of its location but easier to "cure" than most others. It's great that you have so much love and care around you for this coming journey and my love and best wishes are with you.

  • So sorry I clicked report instead of respond!!  Apologies.

Thank u for taking the time to reply.  Yes I think I will struggle with time but the fact he's only several months on us still early days.  Hopefully his recovery will progress well now that treatment has finished.can I ask what his diagnosis was? One side?

    Regards Kerry.

  • yes, one side but no lymph nodes.

  • Hi looks like iam about to start the same journey as yourself, had the offending tonsil out 7 days ago it'was lymphoma awaiting referral appointment for follow up treatment, have you started your treatment yet, just wondering what to expect and how your doing.

  • It;s not me, its my brother. He has had radiotherapy, peg fitted through which he receives nourishment. He is doing well.....just started to actually eat more solid foods such as well cooked pasta, in small amounts. His neck and throat are sore from the radiotherapy and improvement is very slow but happening.
