Breast reconstruction? Or not?

I've recently been diagnosed with breast cancer and just undergone 2nd batch of biopsies to determine if chemo needed before mastectomy.

It's been mentioned that I could be considered for reconstruction but I wondered what opinions people had of this?

  • Hi there , yes go for it. I had lump removed with conserving the breast. That means it's smaller only slightly, looks & feels like I have a normal breast. Do it I say feel like a woman ,will swim no hesitation. Pip

  • I think this is a very personal decision. Some people are happy to remain flat if having a mastectomy, or slightly uneven or deformed if having a lumpectomy. Others find the prospect of losing a breast very traumatic. If you haven't already, have a look at this article on CRUK www.cancerresearchuk.org/.../breast-reconstruction

I had made the decision to remain flat if I needed a mastectomy, but have just had a lumpectomy with reductions on both sides as that was an option offered to me. I hope you come to the decision that is right for you and wish you well. Happy to keep in touch if you would like to x

  • Thank you for the opinions, probably need a bit more info from my consultant too before I make a decision.  It is valuable to know what other people have decided though as it sheds light on factors which I haven't thought about.

    Take care all x

  • A very personal choice. Discuss in detail with your surgeon and ask to see photos of outcomes if possible. Mammoplasty, reconstruction using implants, mastectomy without reconstruction and lumpectomy may be your choices.
I had  bilateral breast cancer and was offered a lumpectomy or a mammoplasty. I chose a mammoplasty and I am delighted with the results.
    Good luck .

  • Thank you, I'm so grateful to hear of other people's experiences. I know it's a personal choice but hearing other stories is useful. I know a lumpectomy is out of the question for me unfortunately but hopefully things won't be as scary with a bit more information.

    Take care x

  • Hello Amy, I find the wording, ie deformed inappropriate.  Be a little kinder. Yes its not symetrical .I prefer it was designed or modified.  Either way less invasive than a full mastectomy or fake implant. Only I know, see & feel the benefit from this procedure. At 66 I have a normal figure & confident  to wear a swimming costume.agreed not for everyone, down to personal choice. Pip
