Elbow CT for breast cancer

Hi.

I found out on 2nd Feb that I have been diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer, grade 3 which was also found in the lymph node biopsy. I was told I would need MRI, CT scan and genetic testing before starting any treatment.

I have received the letters in the post for my appointment dates for MRI and CT scan but I am confused by the wording on the CT letter as it just says Elbow Rt. Does this mean that they are only scanning my elbow? It is on the same side as the cancer but I thought they would scan more of my body to check that it hasn't spread. Is it to check other lymph nodes? Has anyone else had similar?

Also, the person who was supposed to contact me about genetic testing did not call when they said they would (over a week ago).

I am a naturally impatient person and I am concerned that if they haven't done the wider CT scan and genetic testing then this is going to delay any treatment. I am only just 50, have two children (aged 15 and 11) and am a teacher so I need to start making plans for dealing with this and getting support.

Should I ring my breast care nurse on Monday or wait until I have had the CT scan (Thursday).

Thanks.

  • Hi there, I would certainly ring to see why this has been requested, definitely speak to your breast care nurse. Sometimes errors are made, maybe totally relevant to yr situation but seems a bit odd unless they are looking for something specific. If it is an error you don't want to waste  time, it needs corrected, however if it's appropriate your breast care nurse will confirm this.

    Hi Gouldie,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

I am a breast care survivor of 13 years and have seldom heard of anyone needing a Ct of an elbow. As Kiera says, there may be a specific area that they want to see, but you are best to make sure.

Please phone your breast care nurse on Monday and ask if this is correct. You may have to leave a message on an answering machine in the first instance, but the nurses usually get back to you as quickly as possible. It would also be adviseable to tell her that you have heard nothing from the person who is supposed to be arranging the genetic testing.

I hope that you can get this sorted out soon. Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thank you ladies for your replies.

I managed to speak with the breast care nurse today and apparently I have two CT scans booked on the same day. The first is upper body and the second is the right elbow to check the lymph nodes on that side. It appears that my other letter has just not arrived yet. I feel a lot better for speaking with someone and getting this resolved.

I imagine I'll be posting lots of questions as I go through this journey so I appreciate the advice and support.

    Xx

great that you have spoken to your team I understand it's a confusing time too at appointments tgere is so much to take in and the appointments go very quick and when you leave it's like what did they say I was that stressed at my first appointments I gave wrong gp details for myself as my mind was racing , I promise you after the first few weeks things calm down and you learn to take each day at a time I hope all goes well at your two scans lovely

    please stay here for support

  • Hi Gouldie,

I am so glad to hear that you managed to speak with your breast care nurse today and that she was able to clarify matters for you.

We are always here for any questions that pop up along your journey. I hope that all goes well with your CT scans and that you won't have too long to wait for the results. With any biopsy or scanit is always worth asking when you can expect to get the results, at the time that you have them. There's nothing worse than waiting without a timeline.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Gouldie just got yr friend request . How are things going? Ok I hope.
    Happy to chat anytime xxx

  • Hi all.

    Thanks for the replies.

So the scans went OK and didn't show anything different to what I was told at my original diagnosis. I've met the Oncologist and have just started chemotherapy. Feeling so much better to have a plan in place now.

It's a long journey ahead but at least I can now see where it is going and an approximate time frame!

Thank you for your support. I'm sure I'll be back with further questions in time. Xx
