Consultant says I have Breast Cancer, waiting for results

Hi please can someone help me. I went to my gp who felt my lump and she did not think the lump was anything to worry about and she could feel nothing in my armpit. She suggested that I visit the breast clinic as she obviously could not rule it out for certain. I went on Friday and had a mammogram and ultrasound and the consultant told me there and then that she was certain that i had breast cancer but wanted take a biopsy from the lump and from under my arm. She took three samples from each. My friend told me today that she should not have told me that until she had the evidence from the biopsy as the biopsy could still come back benign. I have now got it in my head that it must have spread and it must be incredibly bad and that's how she knows without evidence. Please could someone help me as I am now so scared again

  • I know how you feel Merlin. Its awful. Google is also awful but it somehow draws us in even though we know its no good for us.

Good luck and let us know how you get on xxx

  • Definitely ️.  Thanks lara

  • Hi Merlin

I too was informed this week at the breast scanning centre that they had found a lump in my breast following a routine mammogram that it was cancer and they would need to take biopsies.  Having supported my mum through various cancer diagnoses over the years I have learnt that they are very up front these days.  It did shock my husband a little though

Although very shocked to hear this diagnosis as it was the result of a standard mammogram appointment, I was grateful for the doctor who completed the ultrasound for being honest.  At least now I can find out as much information as I can prior to my appointment with the surgeon and feel prepared to ask the right questions.  It's the waiting for the biopsy results that's now the challenge ...

It's also been a comfort to me to read everyone's responses to you on here ️

Sending you a big virtual hug

  • Thanks Sam for getting in touch and I am sorry that you are having the same feelings as me. The wait is just awful. Every time I get an ache I am panicking that I have it there as well. I agree this site is very positive and the responses that everyone has posted have been both uplifting and positive and you are so grateful for them taking the time to respond. I really hope you get some positive news and will definitely keep in touch.

    Lots of love ️

  • Hi Nic

Jenn, one of the admins from here kindly recommended I spoke to one of the nurses at Cancer Research UK.   I have just come off the phone from them and it was helpful to talk things through whilst waiting for my next appointment.

    They're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

    Big hugs   ️

  • Thanks Sam I will give that a try that sounds really helpful and a fantastic idea x

    Hi Sam,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

I am so sorry to hear that you are in this unenviable position too, but I am glad to hear that you found it by routine mammogram and have caught it earlier than you would have done otherwise. I don't know how long it is since your Mum was diagnosed with cancer. My Mum was diagnosed with primary breast cancer in 1985 and she died in 1997 from secondary breast cancer. I was first diagnosed in 2010 and again in 2011. There has been no comparison between the diagnosis, treatment and aftercare whch we both experienced. Cancer care has really advanced considerably in the past few years, so please don't compare your situation to that of your Mum.

I am glad to see that you found your chat with our nurses helpful - and so much better than consulting 'Dr Google', which only serves to scare people further. Do you know when you are likely to get your biopsy results? Make sure to take a list of any questions with you, next time you have an appointment, as it is all too easy to forget something important at the time. I do this for every appointment, as the questions change as I travel my journey. I still lead a busy and fulfilling life 13 years on from my diagnosis, so cancer isn't always as bad as we expect at first.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

    Hi Clara,

I'm glad to hear that you're feeling ok at present, but you'll find that this journey is a bit of a rollercoaster - uo one day and down the next. However, you are right not to worry, as no amount of worry will change the outcome either way.

You will find the support here phenominal, as we all know first hand what you are going through and are always here to help where we can.

Please don't hesitate to update us on your journey.

Keeping my fingers crossed for good news.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

    Hi Chaz,

I'm so sorry to hear that you are on this journey too. The waiting is bad enough at any time, but always worse when it is extended for additional tests. Having had to have these myself, all I can say is that they should help to target your treatment more accurately.

Have you been told when you will get your results? It is always worth asking this after every test. Even if it is only a ball park figure, it is more helpful than being left in limbo, at such a worrying time. You should begin to feel better, as soon as you know what type and grade of cancer you are dealing with and what treatment is planned for you.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you're getting on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Merlin,

Just wondering how you are feeling? My anxiety is going up by the hour with results day getting closer. I want it to hurry up but I want it to go away at the same time. Thank god its almost the end of the working week. Xxx
