Consultant says I have Breast Cancer, waiting for results

Hi please can someone help me. I went to my gp who felt my lump and she did not think the lump was anything to worry about and she could feel nothing in my armpit. She suggested that I visit the breast clinic as she obviously could not rule it out for certain. I went on Friday and had a mammogram and ultrasound and the consultant told me there and then that she was certain that i had breast cancer but wanted take a biopsy from the lump and from under my arm. She took three samples from each. My friend told me today that she should not have told me that until she had the evidence from the biopsy as the biopsy could still come back benign. I have now got it in my head that it must have spread and it must be incredibly bad and that's how she knows without evidence. Please could someone help me as I am now so scared again

  • Hi Merlin,

I was also told there at the breast clinic that they thought I had breast cancer. They know what it looks like and I think they tell you so it's not such a shock when your biopsy results come back. Obviously, they do sometimes get it wrong but I don't think that's often. Having said that, I like Laraj am fine now after treatment, back to work getting on with my busy life. That's the story for the vast majority of us as treatment is so good these days. We will all be here for you if needed, we all know how you're feeling but you will get through it.

    Love Jane xx

    Hi Merlin,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

Doctors tend to be very straight with patients these days. They can sometimes tell by the shape of a lump, whether it is cancerous or benign. As JaneRu says, they sometimes get it wrong, but not very often. The biopsy is the definitive test to tell if it is cancerous. I have had 3 lumps since I was first diagnosed. In all cases the consultant was pretty sure that they were cancerous. Fortunately, he was only right in two out of the three cases. In some ways this helps the patient to come to terms with the diagnosis before it is actually given, as it can be quite a shock when it comes out of the blue.

It is only natural to think that it has spread - our imaginations can play havoc with us at this stage. I was again fortunate, in that both of mine were primary, grade 1 cancers. I was first diagnosed 13 years ago and I still lead a busy and fulfilling life.

Were you told when your biopsy results should be back? It usually takes 1-2 weeks, but can take a little longer in some areas. It is not at all unusual to find your emotions all over the place, whilst you are waiting for results. It should get easier once you get your diagnosis and a treatment plan for the way forward.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thank you all for getting back to me it is immensely kind of you to take the time to reply. I am due to go back on the 15th Feb so hopefully things will get slightly better after then.

    thanks again ️

  • Hello

The waiting is an absolute nightmare. I was a month before having complete facts & was just about going out of my mind. They should have been more sensitive without evidence of pathology. However what I have learnt is this, if a consultant uses the word tumour prior to pathology results they are simply confirming that they are identifying a mass but until the pathology results come back they have no guarantees that the mass/growth/tumour is benign or malignant which is why it is important to have the full facts.

Doesnt make the waiting any easier for you but this might give you some solace till you have hard evidence and by which point there should be discussions about a plan.

Wishing you the very best & here if you need a friend.

    Hi Merlin,

Waiting for results is always the worst time in our cancer journeys. Try to preoccupy your mind with other things and avoid consulting 'Dr Google' in the meantime. Much of the informtion is poorly researched, out of date and aimed at the spectacular. This will only serve to scare you further and be of no useful purpose.

I shall be thinking of you on 15th and hope that you have caught this early.

    Kind regards,
    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Merlin,

We are at very similar stages in this journey. I was told on 17th Jan that they think I have breast cancer. I have 2 areas of concern so have had to have 2 biopsy's a week apart. I had one last Monday and the 2nd one this morning and I get my results on 14th Feb. Let's hope this next week passes quickly. Sending hugs xxx

    Hi Clara,

I am sorry that you find yourself in this unenviable situation too. I am glad to see that you have had both biopsies now and that you just have to wait for your results. This is always an anxious time. Try not to let your imagination take over, as it so often does.

Thinking of you and always here for you. Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
