Pain after breast cancer lumpectomy and lymph node removal

I wish that I had found this forum long ago. My surgery took place on 30th May, lumpectomy and 2 sentinal lymph nodes were removed. the diagnosis was a tremendous shock after having renal cancer surgery in March 2020. Dispite having many follow up CT scan for this, also covering the chest area, nothing showed up until a routine mammogram in March this year. I still have a few tears about it now, and for all you others suffering. Nobody preparess you for how traumatic this experience really is. I was led to believe that I would be back at work after 2 weeks, but the pain was unbearable and like many of you I was convinced that something was wrong. I never saw my surgeon again, just a brief telephone conversation with the surgery results. When I contacted the clinic I was just told that it was early days. I had my last radiotherapy treatment on the 9th August and have still not returned to work. The pain in my arm is very restricting and I am unable to lift or stretch. The radiographers were lovely, but didn't seem to understand my concerns. I know the tenderness in my breats could go on for some time, but what about the size of the nipple? It is much larger than the other, a totally different colour, and feels as though it could fall off if knocked, although I do know that this won't happen! Has anyone else had this problem, or has anyone any advise to give. I need to return to work but at the moment with the arm pain and socks stuffed down my bra, I don't think it will be just yet.

  • Steph,

This sounds truly awful? I'm so sorry you are suffering.

I am due to hve a lumpectomy and all my lymph nodes removed on the right hand side after being diagnosed on Wednesday. I'm dreading this. Also the aftermath of the surgery with chemo and radiotherapy. Xx

  • Hi Steph I am so sorry to hear you are still in such pain. Your surgery was a while ago and if you are still in severe pain with restriction of movement I strongly urge you to contact your surgeons secretary. You could do with an ultrasound to see what is going on. You may have a large Seroma or haematoma that needs draining. Don't suffer in silence you need to be seen. Have you got the breast care nurses number? If so phone them and say you need to see the surgeon again as you are still in a lot of pain. Please keep us updated on how you have got on. Tomorrow morning phone them. PLEASE. Xx

  • Hi Steph

Sorry to hear you are still in pain. I would phone the breast nurses and say that it's unbearable I did that after radiotherapy and they called me back into the hospital for the doctors to look at. I could move my arms after a few weeks after surgery, but the radiotherapy made the area sore and stiff.
    Best wishes

  • I had masectomy and lymph node removal and was amazed at how quickly I recovered from the surgery. Also there is a feeling of relief that the cancer has been removed. Try not to think far ahead, just concentrate on getting the surgery out of the way and it will be awhile before treatment starts. One step at a time!

  • Hi Linda, you must be extremely apprehensive, especially after reading these posts. Stay positive, you were diagnosed and surgery will address the situation. I just seem to be one of those people that hold on to bruising for months! I admit that I was concerned about the radiotherapy but it was a doddle really. The hardest thing was being able to hold your breath for 20 seconds. I would advise you to buy the best bra you can, preferably fully adjustable, it will make things easier. Good luck. xx
