Good morning, I'm very grateful to find this community and I hope someone can offer us some advice or share their experience.
I'm posting on behalf of my mum. Last Tuesday, we found out she has breast cancer. We are very fortunate that it as found early via mammogram. It is currently grade 1. Mum has been offered a choice of treatments and is wondering what to do for the best. The surgeon and nurse we met with were lovely and helpful but some first hand experience would really useful.
Her first option is a lumpectomy with a node biopsy. This may need to be followed up by radiation therapy and further surgery depending upon how the operation goes/what they find. The second is a full mastectomy. My mum is very petite and no reconstruction is offered if she has a lumpectomy. She has been told the mastectomy would not need to be followed up with radio therapy and she could have reconstructive surgery if she wanted to.
Are there any ladies or gentlemen (I know cancer doesn't care about gender) who are petite and have had to make this choice? Or have a family member who made this choice? Mum has been told she can delay her operation (Thursday) to give her more time to research but she's not keen to do this.
Thank you in advance.
B
