Treatment options for breast cancer

Good morning, I'm very grateful to find this community and I hope someone can offer us some advice or share their experience.

I'm posting on behalf of my mum. Last Tuesday, we found out she has breast cancer. We are very fortunate that it as found early via mammogram. It is currently grade 1. Mum has been offered a choice of treatments and is wondering what to do for the best. The surgeon and nurse we met with were lovely and helpful but some first hand experience would really useful.
Her first option is a lumpectomy with a node biopsy. This may need to be followed up by radiation therapy and further surgery depending upon how the operation goes/what they find. The second is a full mastectomy. My mum is very petite and no reconstruction is offered if she has a lumpectomy. She has been told the mastectomy would not need to be followed up with radio therapy and she could have reconstructive surgery if she wanted to.

Are there any ladies or gentlemen (I know cancer doesn't care about gender) who are petite and have had to make this choice? Or have a family member who made this choice? Mum has been told she can delay her operation (Thursday) to give her more time to research but she's not keen to do this.

Thank you in advance.

  • Welcome to Cancer Chat B although I'm sorry to hear your mum has been diagnosed with breast cancer.

Deciding what treatment to opt for can be difficult but many of our members have been through this so your mum is not alone and hopefully you will get to find out about their experiences soon. Do feel free to use the 'search forum' option in the purple bar above to find discussions about this as well as our community are very welcoming and will do all they can to help.

We have some information on our website about the treatment options your mum has been offered, as do Breast Cancer Now, but if either of you would like to speak with our team of cancer nurses about this they're available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

I hope your mum is able to come to a decision soon and all goes well for her tomorrow.

    Kind regards,

  • I guess only your mum can decide but if it was me with Grade 1, I'd go for the lumpectomy.  Especially as a small tumour although the surgeon has to get clear margins around the tumour due to the nature of cancer so takes out a bit extra.  She would then only need more surgery if cancerous lymph nodes were found in the biopsy.  Her breast won't look the same but she'll still have one.  Radiotherapy involves attending hospital every day for however many days are given (around 15-19)  applying lots of cream and then protecting your skin for life with factor 50 sunscreen.

    Take care.
