My journey with tonsil cancer

Hi I am Davy and I have been diagnosed with tonsil cancer since 29 June this year, I had my operation to remove my left tonsil and that was scary. I had to see the consultant and he was lovely I had a nurse assigned to me for the time I was in there for and she was brilliant, I had to go and get changed for the operation with only my undies and shoes on with a gown over the top lol to day I was a little embarrassed was an understatement lol but there I lay on the table with these four or five people buzzing round me and as usual in goes the canuler and then the surgeon days time to sleep Davy .when I woke up I was on in bed in the ward and feeling ok but sore and a little drowsy. The nurse asked I wanted and water so I opted to say yes and had a few cups with straws but the as time went on she asked if I wanted ice cream so I had a few of those to to cool the throat down. She asked if I was ok to stand and walk in which I obliged and then asked if she could call my wife so I said yes plz. With in the next two hours I was deemed to go home if I was fit enough to do so and I agreed as I hate hospitals especially at this time lol. My wife and father in law came and get her me and that was fine I was happy to get to my own bed. But now after a week and a half I get my appointment for the consultant to see me to see how I am healing on August 31st and am wondering what's next?

  • Hi Dave,

I had my tonsils out when I was seven (not cancer, they just took them out in those days if they got infected) and the only way they got me to go in without kicking and screaming was with promises of ice cream when it was done.  I think I envisaged ice cream for every meal and was very disappointed, I got it once!!! You can tell how emotionally distraught I was to remember it 68 years later,  I was in hospital for a week, unheard of these days. I'm glad you got your ice cream!

Good luck with the next stages of your journey. I look forward to hearing that all is going well.

    Christine x
