Dermoid cyst - do I have to have a full hysterectomy??

Hi All,

I've recently been diagnosed with a dermoid cyst and expected a laporascopic procedure to remove it. But, I've now been told a full hysterectomy is necessary.

My problem is, it's come at the worst possible time. My mum has gall bladder cancer that has spread to her liver and I need to be supporting her at the moment. The thought of 8-12 weeks recovery time from a full hysterectomy is not great.

Has anyone been faced with this and managed a cyst removal in another way that doesn't have the long recovery time?

Look forward to hearing other people's thoughts and experiences.

  • Hi I have a 5cm dermoid on my left ovary. It hasn't caused any pain and so it's just been left. (This was decided in the hospital as I was waiting to undergo surgery!) I had to have a bowel resection a few years after the dermoid was discovered and asked if they would remove that when they did the resection as it was on the same side but they said they were going to leave it. You could always ask for a 2nd opinion. I presume you have discussed your situation with your consultant .To be honest though these things never come at good times. I'm sorry to hear of your mum's diagnosis. I wish for the best for you both
