new here

My husband  has been diagnosed  with cancer of ureter He had bladder cancer 6 years ago which was successfully treated he has had repeated uti's and investigations showed the cancer in the ureter His kidney function is reduced so surgeon says removal ok kidney and ureter not an option He removed all visible cancer in ureter placed a stent and is testing husband's blood to see if this has improved gfr He says as long as cancer returns inside the ureter he will remove it  but once it gets outside there is no treatment Needless to say we are devastated

My husband is 79 and apart from high blood is well and fit He cycles weather permitting and we both go to the gym He feels well especially since the stent has cleared the blood and bacteria from his urine

I feel so sick we only got the news last night and it's just sinking in

    Hi Wilbert,

    Welcome to our forum.

I am so sorry to hear of your husband's situation. This must have left you both devastated. One thing that I have discovered in my 12 year journey with 2 bouts of breast cancer, is that there is no point in worrying about 'what ifs' - life is too precious to waste on what might never happen. Instead look on the positives and seize the day. It is good news that he is managing better with the stent. Try to make the most of each and every day and make memories where you can.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for both of you.

    Kind regards,

  • Thank you so much My husband's case is going to mdt and we are hoping the oncologist may have suggestions  I've found some good information here about treatment options We are also hoping  the bloods yesterday will show an improvement in his kidney function Once the stent was in he passed  just over a litre of urine which had obviously been backing up It was constant uti's which has led us to were we are now

Thanks again Had his 4th booster today so we combined it with breakfast out at one of our favourite restaurant

    Best wishes

    Hi Wilbert,

This sounds a lot more hopeful. Yes, there are bound to be other tests prior to any procedure and the prospect of surgery is always scary, but it's great to hear that this is a possibility again. I hope that this will be carried out soon, thus helping to reduce your anxiety.

Please keep in touch and let us know how he is getting on and remember that we are always here for you.

I am hoping and praying for a good outcome.
    Kind regards,

    Jolamine

  • Thank you so much my anxiety levels are much reduced and I can look at the sweet peas we put in last week without wondering if my husband will see them flower

    Very best wishes

    Hi Wilbert,

i am delighted to hear that you are feeling less anxious now. If your sweet peas are growing like mine, he'll definitely be here to see them flower.

It's so good that you've got some positive results.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine

  • Mr W had a scan on Friday at Dept of nuclear medicine This morning we had a phone call asking us to attend an appt to see the consultant  this Friday

Didnt expect things to move so quickly I'm terrified it's bad news

    Hi Wilbert,

I am glad to hear that the scan has been done. The wait for the reslts is always a worrying time, but it's good that you don't have long to wait for the results. Getting the results so quickly has no bearing on the outcome, so try not to panic. I hope that all goes well on Friday.

    Kind regards,

  • Thanks you  I have just googled the dept website and it seems they operate a quick turn round on results

We are now going to a major teaching hospital attached to a university Its huge like a small town quite a change from our previous hospital which once was a workhouse

    Best wishes

    Hi Wilbert,

I expect that the bigger hospital has access to more machinery and can process everything 'in house, which will make things quicker. Operating a quick turnaround on results is a great help to patients, as we imagine all sort of things at this stage.

    Kind regards,

  • Sods law the tumour in the ureter i on the side where the kidney is working  at 80 % the other kidney where my husband  had kidney stones 9 years ago is only 20% So removal not an option However consultant thinks cancer is slow growing and has been there around 18 months when kidney function showed slight decline on his last mot with gp The mdt also want the biopsy re checked by the pathology dept at their hospital It was reported at our previous hospital It will probably still report as cancer but as it was such a small patch they may be able to stage and grade Not giving up yet and hoping if not cured managed by try with cryotherapy or laser x

    Hi Wilbert,

I am sure that this is not what you wanted to hear. However, it is good news that the cancer does not appear to be an aggressive form and is slow growing.I hope that you can manage to get a grade and stage from the next biopsy - have you any idea when he will get this?Certainly don't give up. It sounds as if there are still treatment options available. We have to look for any positives with this awful disease, no matter how small they are.
    Kind regards,

  • Finally  more positive news altho surgery and chemo via blood stream or tablet not an option they are going to put it into the bladder and there is a slim chance it could infiltrate ureter

Starts next Friday  weekly for 6 weeks then 6 week break and surgeon will do look see and change the stent my husband has in and laser away anything he feels looks suspicious He and the mdt seem confident it's slow growing and could be a couple of years before it gets out They think it had been there for a couple of years before symptom appeared lot can happen in that time so we are feeling much happier

    Best wishes

    Hi Wilbert,

Thank you for the update. I am so glad to hear that you now have some more positive news. I hope that your husband copes with the chemo inserted into his bladder and that this can buy him more time.

Please remember that we are always here for both of you and keep in touch.
    Kind regards,
