Meeting with surgeon

Hi all

i believe I have just been told I have Breast cancer.  I saw the Dr at the hospital and then sent to have an ultrasound followed by mammogram followed by biopsy.  I was told results take a week. I was then sent back to the Dr to get an appointment.  The Dr called me in and basically dropped it on me that my lump was malignant and it's in my lymph nodes as well.  This was such a shock to me as she 2 hours earlier had told me it was a cyst.   She then said I will see the surgeon next week to discuss my treatment.

I was on my own and burst into tears with the shock. I came out not knowing what was happening to me.   Thinking about it further I don't understand why she has told me that? How could she know it's malignant before getting the biopsy results?

I'm so upset about the way it's been handled and that I have to wait 10 days before I see the surgeon and get the biopsy results.  My head is spinning.  I don't know what will happen at my meeting with the surgeon.  Can anyone help? Will they tell me all the treatment I'll need - I'm so scared of the thought of chemo

  • I am so sorry you received the news like that - its so shocking when you are told isnt it. On the day I had mammogram and ultrasound after finding a lump, I was basically told that it was cancer - cant remember the words.

At the next meeting, when they had biopsy result, I met Consultant who talked it all through and explained everything. I then had an MRI to double check whether they would do sutgery or chemo first. In teh end I had surgery which removed all the lump (it was big but I have big boobs so did not have to have a mastectemy). About to start chemo this week.

Have they assigned you a breast cancer nurse? They are really helpful for queries and concerns?

  • Hi thank you so much for replying. What is the MRI like? I've never had one before and I get very claustrophobic so that's worrying me too.

No I haven't been assigned a nurse yet. I'm guessing that will happen on Wednesday.

Wishing you all the very best with you chemo

  • The MRI was ok - you lie on your tummy with each boob in a "hole". It took half an hour - I just closed my eyes and relaxed. Half way through I had a dye injected. It makes you feel like you have wet yourself which they didn't warn me about. But I tried to ignore it and planned how I would run to the car with soggy trousers!! But it's just a sensation so no soggy trousers!! So all in all a little undignified (I'm not the smallest person in the world) but ok.

  • Hi

MRI scanners are claustrophobic and extremely noisy but u get headphones and u can speak to them if worried. Best thing is to shut your eyes when u enter the tube. That's the worst bit.

  • Thank you. I haven't been told I actually need an MRI yet but it's another massive worry for me.    This time tomorrow I'll be at the hospital waiting for my results.  I'm so scared

  • The Drs are very  clear, precise,  kind and thoughtful as r everyone in the cancer care. They are fabulous,  It's the effects of the treatment that's the worst, so get as many aids in like Immodium, Diarolytes, antisickness, creams, mouthwashes etc. Be prepared for several effects at the same time.

Sending strength and hugs to u.

  • Take someone with you they may have to wait in the area outside the clinic for your appointment but they can see the doctor with you. The strict no extras in hospital have been relaxed, to enable relatives to attend appointments when needed.

l hope you are able to get the answers you need do take a list of questions you would like to ask. It's hard to remember everything when you get home that's why l recommend a friend or family to go with you.

    Take care
