Mastectomy

I found out today that I might need a mastectomy. I've been crying all day. In the space of a few weeks it has went from removal of cancer with breast lift to now a reduction or mastectomy depending if we get clear margins or not from my first op to remove cancer. If I need a mastectomy I won't qualify for reconstruction due to my BMI which isn't massively over the requirement. I'm really struggling with it all. I feel that I'm being vain when I should be lucky that my cancer is early and treatable.

  • Hi Twinmum.

Really sorry to hear you have received this news today. Its OK to cry and you are not being vain at all. The idea of losing a part of you is totally terrifying and any breast surgery and cancer diagnosis no matter how early and treatable has a huge effect on a person mentally and physically.

What was it that changed the treatment plan for you?

Be kind to yourself! You never have to apologise for how you are feeling.

    Sending hugs x

  • Thank you for the reply.

When I went to get my magseed ultrasound they ended up doing more biopsies as there was another area they weren't sure about which turned out to be cancerous too. I have 5 small areas over a section of my breast. I do have large breasts so hoping the reduction works out. Xx

  • Hi Twinmum & Bubblesmum!

Just to let you know that surgery is done!

Was home by 2.30pm curled up on the sofa with my nest of cushions /pillows. Felt quite fuzzy for a while but OK now and no pain at the moment. Keeping on top of the drugs to hopefully keep the pain at bay. Hoping for a decent sleep and see how I feel in the morning!

Anyway, just thought I would update!

Hope you are both doing OK.

    Sending love xx

  • Hi,

I have Pleomorphic Lobular Carcinoma InSitu, is that what you have? I've had one lumpectomy, then had to have haematoma evacuation 6 days later which was very scary! Lumpectomy results yesterday and margins aren't clear so unfortunately I have to have a second excision on 4th April. I'm gutted they have to go in again. I'm thinking if they don't get it all this time I'll have a mastectomy. Recovery has been really challenging and I still can't wear a crop top, sports bra or soft cup bra for any longer than a couple of hours. Intense itching, needle stabbing and feeling that all fabric that touches the nipple is chafing.
My sons seem to think I should be ecstatic as it's still non invasive and don't understand why this has got me down. Daughter is more understanding and husband is supportive understanding my frustration as this impacts in our life together.

Really lovely to see the interaction and mutual support on this thread and to know we experience similar things xx

  • Hi there

I have invasive lobular cancer, grade 3, stage 2 . Not sure if stage 2a or 2b as although there were a few cells in 1/4  sentinel nodes the report says negative lymph involvement.  I really didn't expect a second op either as surgeon had removed lots of tissue (660 grams in each breast ) the first time. The second op was much quicker though.

I understand how you're feeling, I initially had stinging, throbbing pain. Now I'm at the intense itching, numb in some areas stage. I'm also leaking from the incisions as they heal and going from soft cotton bras to cotton crop tops at night. I only just tried to stop putting dressings onto the breast creases as of today to see if that helps with the itching. I can still only sleep on my back which isn't my normal sleeping position but I'm still glad I got the reduction as it will be great once it all settles. No-one really explains how long it will take to heal. The breast nurse said 3-4 weeks but I'm now 8 weeks since my first main surgery and I'm nowhere near back to normal.

I think we just need to be patient and know that the tumours are being dealt with.  I find waiting on results and upcoming appointments difficult. It's not nice that we all have to go through this but good to know there is support out there from others in the same boat.

I wish you well for your 2nd op and hope you get clear margins this time. X

Ps great to hear everything went well with your surgery PositiveT,  all the best for your healing. X

  • Hi PositiveT

That's great news. Hope you managed to get a decent night's sleep and good that you are in the road to recovery. I'm four weeks post lumpectomy and feel fine - have played tennis twice this week and not had any pain. I'm sure it won't be long before you're feeling more like yourself again.

    take care

    x

  • Thank you!

Wow, tennis after 4 weeks sounds pretty impressive!! That's fab that you've recovered so well!

Have been a bit more sore today but to be expected I guess now the anesthesia and block will have fully worn off!!

Sending hugs and best wishes xx

  • I'm right handed and my lumpectomy was on my left breast which made it a lot easier. So fed up I won't be able to play for a while after my mastectomy. It's the best thing for my mental and physical health.

Your soreness probably won't last too long - mine got easier after the first few days.

    xx

  • Thanks for the update, I've been thinking of you. Hope you're feeling ok today.

I'm good, nerves kicking in for me already. Xx

  • Thank you!

I'm doing ok. Sore. But otherwise fine. Taking it easy and trying to rest!!

Not long to go now...hang in there, the last few days will go so quickly.

Keep busy, and look after yourself xx

  • How are you feeling now?

I had my covid test today and my dye thing is tomorrow.

    Feeling very nervous. Xx

  • Hey!

I'm doing ok. Sore and uncomfortable and the itching is kicking in.....just wanna rip the dressings off and have a good scratch haha. Also tired still but guess that will last a while.

    I didn't have a dye.....what's that for?

Try not to worry (as if that's possible) but honestly the surgery was way less traumatic than expected.

    You've got this! Xx

  • Oh I can imagine how uncomfortable you'll be and the itching omg! Can't wait for that.

I'm dreading having two 4yo boys jumping about me. Thankfully Grandparents are taking them for a couple of nights.

It's the dye injection for lymph node biopsy that they will do along with surgery. They will remove a couple of nodes just to make sure there isn't any spread.

    Keep resting up xx

  • Ah I see! Yes that makes sense. They didn't do anything to my lymph nodes.

Grandparents are a god send aren't they! I have (one!) four year old so she spent two nights with Granny!!! Don't think we would have coped with her here wanting to play with mummy all weekend!!!

Hope tomorrow goes OK and sending all the positive vibes for surgery day xx

  • Yea! So lucky to have great support around us. My Husband's boss has been fantastic and he is working from home this week and taking a couple of days holidays he needed to use up anyway so he'll be able to run after me Haha! It'll make a change.

4 year olds are hard work aren't they? Lol. I'd take the baby stage over and over.

Thank you, will let you know how it all goes. Xx

  • Hard work but fun!!!! My daughter has so much attitude its hilarious! But yes, knackering haha!!

Good to hear your husband's work have been so good. Its another weight lifted isn't it!!

    Lots of love xx

  • Sending hugs and positive vibes for your surgery today (it is today isn't it?!?).

Hope all went well and by the time you read this you will be home, comfortable and being looked after.

    Xx

  • Yes it was today! It went well and I first taken and out and woke in recovery around 12pm. Didn't leave until 4 as I felt really sick and dizzy and also by the time my surgeon came to see me. Been home in bed since about 5pm dozing on and off. Not as dore as I thought, the worst bit is where they took nodes from. Now for the two week wait.

    Hope you're good. Xx

  • Yay!

Really glad that it went well and you are home where you belong to recuperate.

I was the same, really not that sore, so that's good news! Fingers crossed it stays that way.

Have a good sleep! And try not to think about the next wait for results just yet. Concentrate on feeling better!

Wishing you a super speedy recovery. Lots of love x

  • Hey lovely!

    How are you doing?

Hope all is going well and you're not in too much pain and being well looked after.

I'm having a second surgery to fill out the affected breast because there wasn't enough excess tissue to do it in first op. Will be using back fat (lovely) to do a ''flap'.

Surgery was supposed to be tomorrow but my surgeon went and caught covid so now delayed til 7th April.

On the plus side pathology showed clear margins and no invasive! Such a relief!!

Sending hugs and healing vibes your way xx

  • Hey! I'm good thank you? Just a little sore from the lymph node biopsy and some tenderness on my breast. I honestly thought it was going to be worse.

Oh such a pity it's been delayed but glad you know a date. Aw good news your margins are clear, you will be relieved.

I'll find out pathology results on Tuesday then in the next day for surgery.

    You take care xx
