Mastectomy

I found out today that I might need a mastectomy. I've been crying all day. In the space of a few weeks it has went from removal of cancer with breast lift to now a reduction or mastectomy depending if we get clear margins or not from my first op to remove cancer. If I need a mastectomy I won't qualify for reconstruction due to my BMI which isn't massively over the requirement. I'm really struggling with it all. I feel that I'm being vain when I should be lucky that my cancer is early and treatable.

  • Haha I have a single marker already so I guess your boob is worth more than mine lol!

Sounds like your nurse will have it covered.

I'm in Basingstoke in Hampshire. Where are you? Xx

  • I'm in Lanarkshire, Scotland  so the other end of the country.

I'll let you know tomorrow night what it's like. Xx

  • Hi Positive T

Thank you, I think it’s a bit of a long road getting the reduction instead of a lumpectomy but since I wasn’t happy with my size anyway it was a no brainer.

I had the 43mm tumour and a smaller lesion close to it which was going to get removed at same time but turned out to be benign. As the surgeon said having big boobs made it easier to get clear margins ( think if it hadn’t grown it would’ve been just one op)

    Best wishes for your op.x

  • Haha yes couldn't get much further apart!

    Good luck tomorrow lovely xx

  • Thank you.

My surgeon went straight in with the reduction and I wasn't about to argue lol. I have big boobs (34F) and they need to take quite a large area (whole of upper left quadrant including my nipple) so would have been super wonky without the bilateral reduction.

I'm hoping with more tissue clear margins might be easier like you said so fingers crossed!!!

Are you having to have any further treatment once recovered from the surgery?

    Xx

  • Hi Twinmum81

Im also in Lanarkshire, I asked about bras & if one would be supplied since I wouldn’t know what size to buy. The surgeon had said she was aiming for 34D or DD. I happened to have a sports bra that was too small for me  ( I probably last wore it 7-8 years ago)   think it was a 36F which actually fit quite well, remember you will be swollen for a week or so.

I made a mistake in my last message re dates of surgeries, first one was 13th Jan & second one on 10th Feb, so exactly 4 weeks between them. After first op I had an appointment with surgeon 12 days later for results & was given the second surgery date then.  I’m now finished seeing surgeon until about a year from now for a check up. I’ve just to manage the wounds myself or call the breast nurse if I’ve any concerns.

Your nurse was right about the magseeds, seems they’re about £200 each, the Radiologist wasted 2 trying to put mine in ..

I hope your surgery goes to plan, it will fly in now you have a date. Best wishes.x

  • Oh are you? How have you found it. I think there has been a slight lack in communication but it's probably to do with them working between 3 hospitals. My original surgery was cancelled then I got a call asking why I hadn't had my covid test then getting a call to ask how I felt after surgery. Turning up for markers twice and getting more biopsies without warning.

Thanks for all the information regarding bras and time scale. I'm getting away ahead of myself thinking of my second surgery before I've even had my first.

What surgeon did you have? Xx

  • I was the same, as soon as I heard the words mammoplasty I was smiling under the face mask. She said I'll let you think about it but I think I know the answer. My partner was just looking bewildered as he hadn't realised what she meant.  The surgeon also explained that having less tissue would mean radiotherapy would work better and possibly cut down on recurrence risks. Makes sense to me.

Further treatment was to be radiotherapy to breast and hormone therapy as hormone +ve, her2 -ve.  Due to grade 3 and very tiny cells in 1/4 sentinel nodes following surgery they have organised an Oncotype test to see if there would be any benefit to having chemo. Fingers crossed there would be no benefit as it's the one thing I didn't want to happen. I'll know more on 15th March.

I've learned so much from this site since I was diagnosed in November,  still can't quite believe it's happening mind you.  Positive thoughts though & we'll all get through it. x

  • I really hope you get the right result from your oncotype test and don't have to go through chemo. But either way....you've got this.

I haven't been told anything about hormone positive/negative yet. Perhaps after the biopsy on everything that is removed?!?

It's such a journey isn't it. Not one we want to be on but am sure we will get to the final destination!

    Stay strong xx

  • Youre welcome, I've found it's all gone fairly smoothly,  but you're right working between 3 sites is a challenge. I've had some last minute calls to go for a second biopsy ( was a begnin lesion) then different hospital for covid swab and ecg/bloods etc. Then surgery at the other one.  You need a diary to keep track of it all.

Don't get ahead of yourself, I thought one surgery would be it but my tumour grew so hence the second surgery.  It was all removed originally but the margins needed to be bigger.

I'm now onto the next stage & I'm hoping that goes smoothly too. x
