Advanced prostate cancer

Just had 1st dose of Docetaxel. Extreme pain in lower back due to allergic reaction and big hike in blood pressure so session stopped after 10 minutes in. Seeing Oncologist in a week or so to discuss next move, has anyone had this and what maybe were the alternatives? Really would want to have this chemotherapy as it does seem to offer best survival rates.

  • Hello Arthur

I'm sorry to hear about your diagnosis and the fact that your recent treatment session did not go to plan. It's understandable that you may be feeling anxious and disappointed by this and concerned about what next steps the Oncologist may recommend.

I'm going to tag in [@Billygoatt]‍ to my message here and I'm sure he'll pop in to respond when he gets a chance. I'd recommend having a look at this profile and reading his story. Billy has been living with advanced prostate cancer for many years now and his story may give you some hope.

We have a team of nurses here at CRUK that you can speak to and I wonder if you might find it useful to talk things through with them ahead of your appointment with the Oncologist next week. I'm sure they would be happy to offer any advice and information that they can as well as help you think about any points that you may want to raise. If you'd like to chat with them they're available Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040.

I hope that your appointment with the Oncologist gives you some reassurance. Keep in touch Arthur and let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,

I had a bit of a setback, but theres lots in life to remain positive about so we'll see where we go from here.

  • Hi Billy, thanks for your reply.

Going to have to be a little more patient till I see consultant on 28th and hopefully get some answers as to whats likely to be offered next.

Just disappointed I suppose with such a severe reaction to Docetaxel.

Sounds like you've had your moments too.

    All the best

    Arthur
