Immunodeficiency

Hi I have recently been diagnosed with a gastric adenocarcinoma. I am 54 and suffer from a Primary Immune Defieincy. I was wondering if anyone else has a P.D.D or was Immundodeficient before starting chemo and what your experience is/was with chemo?

  • Hello Gazza13

I'm sorry to hear about your recent diagnosis. It's understandably a difficult time for you at the moment.

I've had a look through the form and I can't see that we've any members who have mentioned having PID and have been through chemo. Hopefully, if there are any members here who have this experience they will post to share with you soon.

During my search, I did come across this post by [@caffeineclaire]‍. Whilst you obviously have different cancer diagnoses she has also mentioned having primary immune deficiency. Hopefully, the two of you may be able to offer some support to each other.

Here at Cancer Research UK, we do have a team of nruses that you can call to chat to if you feel that may help. They're available Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040. I'm sure they will be happy to offer any support and advice that they can.

I hope that your treatment goes as smoothly as possible Gazza13. Keep in touch and let us know how you are.

    Best wishes,

  • Oh dear, that was me under 2 different passwords I guess- not sure why!.

Its actually become more complicated since- I have a ridiculously long complex history with severe S.L.E plus kidney & liver disease, recurrent infections & Sepsis, no immune system, skin rashes & lumps, on LTOT (O2) & semi paralysed in a wheelchair (also chest problems & osteoporosis).

I am on lots on strong meds but they keep me on planet earth!?

Amyway I have 2 skin lesions which the Dermatologist is worried about & he asked for a 2 week Red Flag apt to get lesions removed etc in August- about 5-6 months ago. Both grew very quickly & when the Clinic I was sent to finally biopsied them, the small one was Squamous cell carcinoma but twice now the big one has been inconclusive- it’s very big- now trebled in size to 9cm x 6cm on my face & spreading rapidly. It is now painful & looks awful & is giving me headaches. The Cosmetic surgeon is wasting lots of time & has admitted he doesn’t know what to do, as it’s too big for him & it will be major surgery to remove it.

Any ideas of what I can do? I’m pretty desperate & it’s constantly sore now

    thanks claire

  • Hello Claire,

Given that this second skin lesion is very big and it is painful and is giving you headaches, it would be worth I think getting a second opinion on this especially if you feel you are getting nowhere with your current cosmetic surgeon. You can find out more about getting a second opinion on this page.  Alternatively, you could go back to your GP and explain that this is really bothering you and I am sure your doctor will be able to point you in the right direction and tell you what the best options for you might be.

I hope that this gets sorted for you soon!

  • Hi im not much help but hope my info gives you a little bit.

Over 16 years ago I was diagnosed with Addisons,(my adrenal glands don't work) so my body started to shut down luckily I was diagnosed and put on permanent meds( steroids)as my immune system is useless ,if i get any infection including cold I have to increase meds .

I was diagnosed with cancer in Feb 2016 stage 4 uncurable .had chemotherapy to slow it down after so many sessions my steroids stopped working because of chemotherapy and I spent 8 days in hospital, felt better after three days but they insisted I stopped in to make sure then continued chemo that was five years ago when i finished.   im also on hormone therapy for cancer . don't know if that helps you maybe give you a few ideas .

Ps. Without steroids I wouldn't be here,or chemotherapy .So recon I've been lucky.

PPS I reckon your specialist should put you into someone higher up (more expert) hope you get sorted soon .
