Newly diagnosed with grade 2 IDC, grade 3 post surgery

I am a 57 year old lady who Found a lump in my right breast around middle of August 2021. I was due my mammogram on 1st September so wasn't overly concerned as had cysts drained in the past.  Attended my mammogram and pointed out to the radiographer I thought I could feel a lump so advised to see Gp as mammogram results would be another 3 weeks. Attended Gp appointment on 3 rd September referred to breast team,  appointment for 5 th September arranged, very prompt I have to say.

Had ultrasound and biopsies taken on 5 th September then went on holiday. Came back to appointment for biopsy results on 27 th September but had also received my mammogram results which basically said everything ok see you in 3 years!

Attended for biopsy results which shown grade 2 IDC lump 1.9 cm to right breast.  Referred for MRI to confirm size only to get results that something was showing on my thyroid, second lump in the same breast and something in my armpit! Absolutely gutted and a nervous wreck!
Following an MDT made up of different professions overseeing and discussing my case they advised second look ultrasound. I attended  for separate ultrasounds. The  Thyroid ultrasound shown  nothing of concern, the breast ultrasound shown the second lump as a cyst  therefore drained to dryness and the armpit lump didn't show anything of concern too, how relieved was I !

Fnally I had a lumpectomy and sentinel node biopsies done on 27 th November  2021 and from the tissue removed and  sent for testing it shows a grade 3 IDC not grade 2 and a 2.2 cm lump, fortunately the 3 sentinel nodes removed are all negative.

I am now waiting the oncotype DX results to see if I need chemo. I have tried looking to see if there is anybody else on here with the same cancer that has not had chemo for this. As highlighted I know everybodies treatment plan is different.

I am also told that my cancer is ER positive and HER negaive and that I will need radiotherapy and hormone therapy too.

  • No they didnt put a new one in , said it was best to leave it in place.

    Speak soon x

  • Hi minty how you doing? I have my 3 rd cycle on Friday 25 th feb. Have been much better this time up to now. At least I will be half way after this one x

  • Hi Kiera

I'm OK at the moment thanks , had third cycle today , tired but that's all at the moment.Glad your second one was much easier, mine was too.

The only annoying thing is I am back on 12 hourly stomach injections for blood thinning because of blood clot.Apparently I should never have been prescribed warfarin.

    Hope tomorrow goes well x

  • Hi hun I'm glad it's going ok.

oh dear why did they do that then, that's not good.

my cycle is now Tuesdays as I've changed hospitals, not that happy with the care so following a discussion with my consultant they have moved me which I'm happy about.

Hope it continues well hun xxx

  • Oh that's good they moved you -why were you not happy with the care at the other hospital ?

Apparently the doctor who dealt with the blood clot didn't know much about cancer treatment and warfarin not being recommened for prople having chemo, they don't look at the bigger picture.

Luckily my Oncologist picked it up , but it does make you wonder ! x

  • It certainly does!

I am a nurse and the way they tended to my line gave me anxiety! I couldn't believe that they put my dirty dressing on the sterile sheet with all the clean equipment.
No confidence at all in them only one nurse  xxx

  • Hi minty how are you doing? I have my 4 th cycle this coming Tuesday. My Picc line came out a couple of centimetres so had to have it taken out so awaiting new one but think it will be after this cycle. I can't believe I only have 2 left after this but will be very pleased when it's done.

How have you been off yr treatment? I've been ok but gid am I sensitive to hit and cold temperatures, the fire and heating are on and off like I don't know what ha!

    love Andrea xxx

  • Hi Minty how are you doing?

I had my last chemo last Tuesday thank god, just waiting radiotherapy date now.

    how have you been?

    love Andrea

  • Hi Andrea

Good to hear from you. Chemo was mostly kind to me , had last one on Friday and radiotherapy planning appointment tomorrow with a view to 15 sessions in June.

How has your chemo been? Glad that but is over now , but struggling a bit more with the mind games now and how you put fear of recurrence into perspective after treatment xx

  • Hi Minty it's lovely to hear from you. I'm glad it was ok for you. Mine was ok but certainly wouldn't want to do it again.

I have been to see my consultant today so just need to wait for my radiotherapy appointment.

oh my I have to say he was brilliant, he told me with the micro invasion there is no prediction on the impact if this on my prognosis but to be reassured that we have done all we can now so I should enjoy life and keep smiling and we will tackle any issues if they arise , worrying isn't going to change the outcome which I totally agree with and I could worry for the next 10 or so years and nothing happens .

I think I just need to be really positive and the best advice he gave was to keep checking my boobs to become familiar with how the feel now so I should be able to detect changes early, this along with my screening programme should  hopefully provide a good surveillance tool.

I think it's natural that we will worry but life is for living. I have loads of things booked, 5 holidays to start with ha! He just said I need to cover my boob for 2 years when in the sun then after that it should be considered back to normal.

I hope you get some support and reassurance to help you move forward it's so important.

    love Andrea
