Irradiated Blood tattoo?

Hi ! :))

I'm coming up to my last chemotherapy in over a weeks time and I've been thinking about some tattoo ideas to get after I finish (and once I'm allowed to do so, haha). I've never had a tattoo before, and I want my first one to be something related to my cancer ironically enough.

I was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma and now in the future I will need irradiated blood if I ever need a blood transfusion, and the only thing I have is the NHS blood & transplant card stating I need irradiated blood if I ever need one, and since I need this card for the rest of my life I thought it would be a good idea to get a tattoo somewhere in precaution I ever need a blood transfusion and I'm A) knocked out and can't communicate, or B) which is alot more likely, I lose the card.

something simple like a sign or just the words IRRADIATED BLOOD somewhere on my body seem like a good idea haha.

  • Hello imean_itiswhatitis,

That is certainly an original idea! An IRRADIATED BLOOD tattoo ha ha it does sound a bit like the name of a metal band, but why not? I hope you won't lose your card though and that this crucial information is also stored somewhere in your medical records.

An interesting idea and getting a tattoo that is related to your cancer journey is a beautiful symbolical gesture. And well done for coming to your last chemotherapy - just one week to go hooray!!!

I'll be curious to know what sort of tattoo you will eventually go for once you're allowed to get one.

    Best wishes,

  • Great idea.  I also finished my chemo end January 2021. I remember having transplant I was in and out of consciousness at that time so took me a while to remember.  I only remembered last week that I also need irradiated blood.  I totally couldn't remember, no card either about to go for surgery too on Wednesday, pre assess today.   I can make sure there aware but woukd be great tattoo/card to remember.  Hiw do u get hold of a card!! I haven't come across one going through all my info i brough home if anyone knows how to replace would be great.

  • Hi,

Congratulations on finishing your chemo. It's a great feeling. I finished mine in 2020 and I was thinking the same thing. I was going to get the medical symbol with something about irradiation. You can get medical bracelets with a compartment where you put your information. I think I migh just get one of these because heath professionals are more likely to look for a bracelet than a tattoo.

I was thinking of getting a tattoo on my wrist so that it will be noticed when taking my pulse but knowing my luck, they would use the other wrist.
