Pegnancy after cancer (with no chemo)

Is there anyone here with experience of pregnancy after cancer treatment? I was diagnosed with stage 3 tongue cancer at age 39 when my baby was 7 months old. It was treated with surgery and radiotherapy, and I'm now one year clear with a fairly low risk of recurrence (my doctor said that my risk dropped to about 7 or 8% after one year). I've been told there's no reason I shouldn't or couldnt be pregnant again, but that in an ideal world I'd wait 5 years. However given my age (now 40), we don't live in an ideal world!

I really want a sibling for my son but I'm scared. The cancer I had wasn't connected with pregnancy, but that's still a question in my mind about the timing of it - although my knowledge tells me it had probably been growing for years. I'm also aware that pregnancy will reduce my risk of other cancers, e.g. ovarian, and breastfeeding for longer will reduce my chance of breast cancer etc.

Is there anyone else who's been in a similar position and grappled with these fears?

  • Have a look at (the good and the bad) string thares a lady on their [@Dizzle82]‍ who was just finishing treatment then found guess what. And having another one now. Hope you enjoy reading it.

    Best wishes for the future.

  • Just came back to give an update for anyone who may be reading this with similar concerns.

I am now 2 years since the end of treatment and had a clear scan in August. My doctor has just reduced the frequency of my check-ups to 3 monthly as he said the biggest risk of recurrence for my type of cancer is in the first two years.

I'm also 37 weeks pregnant! It's been a straightforward pregnancy. When I told my doctor the news he was thrilled for us and had no concerns.
