4 weeks post chemo radiotherapy for tonsil cancer

Hi guys

Its my first time posting here so just a tad nervous. Its been 4 weeks since i finished my chemo radiotherapy for tonsil cancer. I just wondered if anyone has come accross my particular problem or if i am being impatient. Last week i started to try a wee half cup of tea (cooled) which was fine even with the gloopy saliva, which is reducing thanfully and so i tried a few things like cup a soup etc which went down fine, even though a small amount.

My problem is pain in the roof of my mouth, right at the back when i swallow. Sometimes it can be excrutiatingly painful. Its been like this for the last week. I have stopped experimenting with foods as its even sore with my sips of water. Has anyone else experienced this? Or am i just too impatient.

Thank you in advance xx

  • Welcome to Cancer Chat Gillie-an although I'm sorry about the problems you're having at the moment.

We have a section on our website just here which I hope will help but I'm going to put you in touch with one of our lovely members, [@RadioactiveRaz]‍ as she also had tonsil cancer so will understand the difficulties your currently contending with post treatment. Fingers crossed she will pop by when she can to share her wisdom and advice.

Our cancer nurses are available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m if you'd like to speak to them about this as well.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi Gillie

this is Hazel aka RadioactiveRaz I am 20 month post radiotherapy for tonsil cancer with several affected lymph nodes.Think it may be possible that you are trying too much into your mouth itsbvery very delicate imagine what yiu would let a baby’s have that’s probbably  the stage your mouth is in now it’s been radiated and probably chemo to with a inch of your life your taste buds could be cries. So my advise is little and often it’s also possiythatbyiur uvulva or the dangly bit at back of roof of mouth has like mine melted ,yes melted mine did don’t know when as it was a while before I could open mouth wide enough to look Whatbthe uvulva does is create saliva and helps push food down yiur Throat so it takes a while to readjust.i have a blog www.radioactiveraz.wordpress.com where I detail my treatment and recovery if it helps .

    keep in touch Hazel xx
