Constantly worried after successful chemoradiotherapy ,

Hi,

i was diagnosed with Stage 2 cancer of the oesophagus in Feb 2018. It was a very high up tumour so not suitable for surgery I undertook a chemoradiotherapy course for 5 months which was successful and scans have shown there is no residual cancer anywhere. But I am completely obsessed by the thought of recurrence. I read and re-reread survival stats for my type of cancer. It seems I have a 54% chance of 3 year survival. I am 60 years old with an 80 year old husband who depends on me for most things, although I work full time in a well paid job. Mine is a strange and maybe selfish dilemma, but I would so welcome your thoughts. I have enough savings to have an absolute ball, luxary breaks, weekends away- all the things you dream of when you retire. But for 3 years only. So should I ‘take the money and run’ or live frugally in the hope I beat thet odds? Thoughts please, oh, for a crystal ball!!

  • I'm really glad your treatment was so successful Ceriann although I'm sorry about the recurrence worries that are playing on your mind. Many of our members have dealt with similar thoughts and fears so you're not alone and hopefully you'll receive some support and advice from them soon.

If you haven't done so already, it may be worth speaking to your doctor if it's constantly on your mind as they may be able to help you work through this or refer you on to someone that can.

I'm sure you'll figure out what the right decision is for you soon Ceriann.

    Kind regards,
