Letrozole - Eye problems?

Hi everyone I’ve been taking Letrozole for the last few months and had my annual eye examination a few weeks ago. I provided a list of medications I’m taking and as an afterthought added Letrozole. She said that she’d recommend testing every few months because it can cause eye problems (can’t remember condition that she said).

I mentioned it to my Oncologist and he seemed to ‘poo poo’ it! Saying hundreds of ladies have taken it. Has anyone on here had any eye problems that may be caused by it?

I’m asking today because I’ve discovered a large blood blast behind my iris - not sore or affecting my sight, but just reminded me to ask.

Many thanks J

  • Hi,

Thanks for your reply.  My appointment on 31st is back at the opticians so I don't expect to come away with any more information but I will be asking if he's heard of the connection with these types of drugs.

I just want to understand what's happening, it's disconcerting that something seems to be throwing my vision/focus out...Incidentally, my Breast Cancer Nurse hadn't heard of it because I asked her last week.

    Best wishes.

  • Hi I've been on Letrozole since February 2020 and had an eye test a couple of months ago she said I have the start of cataracts and would now see me yearly to monitor it I told her I was on Letrozole when she asked if my medical history was the same. But I googled Letrozole and eye problems after I got home and it says cataracts can be a rare side effect

  • Hi MilosMum belated reply, I too Googled eye problems. Had an MarI due to daily headache in my left eye, it was thankfully negative . My eye tests were normal but I'm struggling with veiling over the eye snd the headache. How did you get on?

  • Hi Jarri,

All in all the three opticians appointments (the final one was for an OCT scan) found nothing concerning.  The final one in May referred me to our community eye hospital and that appointment was July...there I was told that my eyes are not just GOOD...they are VERY GOOD...He said I do not need an eye appointment before two years as there is nothing wrong! ...so, despite the pulling in my right eye and blurred vision and headache....

I booked an MRI head and neck scan in June and that shows no abnormalities in brain or around eyeball...I honestly don't know what else to do...

My only thoughts are that I might book a yearly brain MRI scan to see if anything changes or becomes visible.

Oh, and my headaches seem to be down to tightness in left shoulder and pulling so I have been referred to muscular skeletal team here...

It's one thing after another   and I really don't know what is what.

Hope you are well and sending best wishes x

  • My MRI was also negative so I can only think that it must be eye strain from cataracts. The waiting list for treatment is very long these days. But now that MRI has been done, I can nag the NHS. Hope you get some resolution!

  • Hiya... I'd be hopefull it might be quick...My mum (who is 76 and had breats cancer at 36) had an eye test last summer at Boots Opticians and he referred her to the eye hospital for treatment as he said she had started with cateracts...She got her appointment through for the beginning of Dec '20....she had both done on the same day and was home for 5 ish....the whole thing was much quicker than we expected...I didn't think they did both at once.!!

Really hope you get sorted soon....fingers crossed x

  • I am taking letrazole and am experiencing severe pain and stiffness in my neck, shoulder and back. I am also experiencing eye irritation. I have cataracts and have had dry eyes but not this constant irritation before taking letrazole.

  • HIya,

It's great that these forums allow us to chat with people in such similar situations, makes everything a little better...

I too have the neck, shoulder and eye problems...I've found a huge difference between the brands of Letrozole...I seem to prefer ACCORD...I've now been taking it since Sept 2020 and I feel things are much clamer.than in the first few months where my body was just trying to find the new normal.

How long have you been taking it?

    Yvette x

  • For a couple of months. I was on anaprazole before but it caused facial hair.

  • Hi all, I'm new to this group, I've been on letrizole for breast cancer,  a year now. I am thinking of stopping taking it as it has, not only, given me severe swelling in my hands and feet but I am also experiencing eye problems. I have just had one eye operation for cataract , I need the second eye doing now but I am now also having problems wit tears in the virtuous fluid, causing black marks in my vision. Insomnia and night sweats are ruining my relationship with my partner too. Im struggling to work. My doctor told me to exercise more - I look after two horses and walk dogs daily. Also after walking my hand swell and throb. Does anyone else have these problems. My consultant says I must stay on letrizole and is reluctant to give me any figures on my chances if I stop taking it.
