Going back to work after breast cancer

Going back to work after breast cancer has been an emotional experience for me.  Anybody else felt emotional going back to work after being diagnosed with cancer?

  • Hi there im trying to decide if I’m ready to return to work after TNBC, mastectomy, chemo x radio therapy and further op needed. I’m very torn as want to get on with my life but don’t think I’ll be able to cope with the pressure, or remember what I’m meant to be doing...also just getting there and being able to cope day in day out.

How have you found it? How long have you been back? Are you on a graded return to work? What sort of environment do you work in? Are you getting any support? I think it’s totally  understandable to feel emotional, even if you enjoy your work. I feel like a totally different person than before and become emotional very easily.

    Good luck with it all.

  • Hi

I've returned to work this week after 3 months off for treatment .. Was looking forward to it and dreading it all at the same time.. I've felt very emotional too ..  Sick of people telling me how well i look when my joints ache and I'm feeling down from.side effects of tamoxifen ...

  • Hi Amanda

Just thought I'd say, I had a terrible few weeks on tamoxifen .. l was so emotional about everything .. ending up in tears at the least little thing ... which is so not me ... only knew it was the tamoxifen when I saw others on here with the same ... don't know if it effected my bones as I've got lots of problems with bones anyway ..

The good news is, it all settled down after that, and l was back to my old self ...now have been taking them just over a year ... and no other problems at all ... so give it time and hopefully yours will settle too ..

  • Hi Chrissie

I had hirrebdhor hot flushes initially on tamoxifen they seem to have gone now .... It's the joint pain I'm really struggling with, I work in a care home so on my feet all day. I've been on the tamoxifen for 9 weeks now xx

  • Hi there ..

Good on you getting back .. but I think we change somehow after cancer touches us ... when you go back you may find some have that "poor you" look on their face .. some think your fine now your back and it's all behind you .. some say the wrong things like "you look well" which I think is a tad better then "you look ill" some might not know what to say , and avoid a conversation ...

But just let it all go over your head .. it's hard for them too .. just give it time for the "new you" to settle in ..  and if you want to have a few tears .. let it out .. be gently honest .. the only ones who really understand are those that cancer has touched .. so you can always come on here and someone will know how you feel ...

Here's to kicking cancers butt ...  Chrissie x
