Letrozole

Hi I’m new to this forum.  I have had breast cancer twice, 2nd time round was in the same breast.  Because of this I decided to go for a double mastectomy to avoid a “3rd” time.  First time round I was put into Tamoxifen for 5 years, apart from the common side effect of hot flushes & mega weight gain  I felt well on then.  However, I’m now on Letrozole, have been taking them for just over 12 months and am experiencing just about every single side effect listed and more.  Recently I have been getting excessive sweating, dull like growing pain in my left leg from hip to  knee, excessive fatigue and more recently bouts of Vertigo & Tinnitus which are so debilitating I keep having to take time off work.  I’m interested to find out  if anyone else is experiencing this on Letrozole?  I also have aching joints which I can cope with, excessive itchiness all over the body, mainly at nigh but I take antihistamines for that.

With all of this going on it’s making me feel like a complete hypercondriact... is anyone else experiencing all of this and how do you cope?

I look forwards to your comments xx

  • Hi there I am the same meds as you after a recurring breast cancer 22 months ago!! I started to feel unwell a couple of months ago which was strange as I have felt ok up to then and it appeared I had a different brand of Letrozole ! I was always on ACCORD  and I had taken another brand which made me feel awful terrible headaches, terrible flushes, and anxiety I am now back on ACCORD and feel better however my weight gain especially around my waist is out of control

But just thankful the drugs are doing their job to date

  • Have you checked that you are being given the same brand of Letrozole because I started having bad side effects after being on it 22 months and it was a different brand !! Now back on the original make I am feeling better

  • Thank you for the info re letrozole. I have now had the generic tablet changed back to femora. I feel so much better.

  • Hiya....!!! I'm thrilled to read your post.... just went downstairs to read it to my husband and I've texted my mum!!

I'm 49. Was on Accord Letrozole from September 20.   Suddenly got changed to cipla or cipra...not sure which.. but different manufacturer  around March...and had them until June...felt lousy... and even said to family maybe this is as good as it gets.... then suddenly three weeks ago I get Accord.... feeling alot better... back at work...less pain ..etc.... don't know if I'll be able to convince the dr's that I need to stay on the same one....

Thanks so much for posting this reply.xx

  • Hi MilosMum,

I took Letrozole for 6 and a half years and can confirm that some brands are more forgiving than others. If you mention the changes you've experienced, I'm sure that your GP will be happy to prescribe Accord all of the time.

    Don't be afraid to ask!

  • Morning Jolamine.....

I'm so excited that I feel better in some ways... just been going through my prescription orders on MyGp App and looking at WhatsApp messages to my mum at each four weekly meds date.... trying to pinpoint the exact date I was given the other brand....I remember telling her that it was a different brand at the time....was trying to see if it coincided with my headaches and eye problems in Feb..

Accord was what I was given for the first months from September.... think they swapped me somewhere earlier this year...so maybe about Feb/ March...

I'm worried they'll think I'm going mad if I ask.... I'll let you know what they say ....

Hope you are keeping well x

  • Hi MilosMum,

Having problems with different brands of Letrozole is fairly common place, so I doubt that your GP will be at all surprised by your request.

Besides, if you don't ask you don't get, so don't be put off. It makes all the difference to get rid of some of the side-effects you've been havin.

Please let us know how you get on. I sincerely hope that you succeed.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Treakkie,

I am delighted to hear that your GP was happy to put you back on Femara, although you may still need to check that the pharmacist has given you this each time you pick up your prescription.

I took Letrozole for 6½ years. Initially I took Femara for a short while and got on well with it. When I was changed to different brands, it was more difficult. My GP changed me back to Femara, but the pharmacist tried to change it back to other brands on a number of occasions. Make sure to check each time before you take them home.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi there.

Re the Femara debacle. My consultant oncologist wrote to the GP and said that the generic letrozole was causing quite severe side effects. I also spoke to the nurse practitioners in the oncology unit. I was so desperate that I suggested that I stopped treatment. It was the nurses who clocked the problem was possibly due to the change in the medication. I hadn't had a decent nights sleep in three months due to the hot flushes every hour. I now have an extra ablet taken once a day to counteract them which is working really well. This drug is called Megestrol. Dosage 20 msg. The local pharmacy had to get permission from the central pharmacy even though it was prescribed by a consultant. The hoops we have to go through!

    take care

    Hi Treakkie,

I am delighted to hear that this additional tablet is helping to reduce your side-effects and, hope that it continues to do so. I have to take some controlled drugs for my cancer too and know how awkward it can be to get them from the pharmacist.

Still, if it does the trick, then it's worth it!

    Kind regards,
