Scoliosis

I have Scoliosis brought on by Multiple Myeloma . It was a late diagnosis and has caused severe curvature of my spine & neck, causing pain if I've been up & around for more than half an hour, not to mention breathlessness. How do others manage pain. I use a lidocaine patch on my right shoulder blade, where I have the most discomfort, Brutrans plasters, & paracetamol. I've also been having cortisone injections in my back. I also tried T.E.N.S. But it didn't seem to help. It's so frustrating, as I can't go out on my own, apart from a 15 minute walk round the block, which leaves me exhausted. My family take me to the park at the weekend, but I need a lie down when I get home, as I do every afternoon, & I'm only 61. I was looking forward to Grandchildren in a few years, more Nature holidays, but have to suffice with friends photos, which I enjoy, & Nature & gardening programmes on the TV. (My gardening is limited to a little pruning & I did manage to plant a few tulips & mulch the beds) I'm glad it's Spring again, the promise of new life. Lots of baby birdlife to look forward to in the local parks. I'm thinking of buying some Autumn & Spring flowering crocuses as they look so beautiful in the parks.

Well enough of my waffling. We already have one waffler on here , who I enjoy following ;-)

Love Julia

  • Hello Julia,

I just wanted to stop by and give you a warm welcome to Cancer Chat.

I’m sorry to hear you were diagnosed with multiple myeloma and that it has brought on scoliosis, it sounds like you are going through a lot and I can imagine this is very tough on you. On the positive side, I’m glad you are still able to enjoy the company of your loved ones and nature.

You asked for suggestions on pain management and I thought of a link I posted a few days ago to [@jasonl]‍ so I decided to share it with you too, you can read more about it here.

And don’t worry about waffling Julia, this is what Cancer Chat is here for. We all need some waffling now and then, don’t we?

    Best wishes,

    Renata, Cancer Chat Moderator

sorry to hear about your Dad. Try and remember the good times. I've lost both my parents - my mum to cancer when I was only 18 & she was 58. My dad lived to the ripe old age of nearly 93 :-) Time is a healer, but I would find , even 20 years after my mum died, I would get a memory of her & it would upset me...just go with the flow. If you want to cry, do so. I hope you have great memories of your Dad. Meanwhile, live your life and do everything you want to do. We never know how long our life will be. I can't do much , for very long, now, so I live vicariously through family & friends who are very supportive. Friends, brothers & sister , nephews & nieces ,show me photos of their children which I have all around my room & also share photos of their holidays. There are some great nature programmes on TV where I can 'imagine' I'm there on holiday. Spring is my favourite time of year. (I saw 15 little ducklings on the lake in our local Greenwich Park, yesterday :-)
