Anyone suffering with late effects from childhood cancer?

Hi. Are there any childhood cancer survivors on this forum who have suffered with later effects? I'd be interested to chat to others if you have, I had ALL as a child and having some problems now and wondered whether these may be after effects.

Update: Hi everyone so I wrote this post years ago. I think what made me put the post at the time was possibly more conected to other another condition which I think in my expereince was linked to other life events and not nesscairly a cancer after effect but I guess we're never know. Either way I can't believe this post is still active after these years and I think that shows how many people are effected by after effects and I think this needs to be more widly recognized. But Im glad this post has brought so many together and helped people to support each other.

you can't seem to delete posts here but people still seem to be commenting and finding it helpful so I guess i'll just leave it anyway.

  • Sorry to hear you have problems with your heart, I hope the tests give you some answers.

fianlly ,someone else speaking about the short term memory issues that can come from chemo! I also had/have some issues with short term memory and I've often felt alone with that so it is good to speak to someone else that had that effect, it seems like its rarley spoken about.

Do you not have a aftercare team? you should of been refered to one after being discharged from specialist.

  • Hi, sorry for such a late reply.

Im sorry to hear you've dealt with so many after effects. how are you doing now? seeing as this was posted many months ago.

Glad to hear you have still been able to live a happy and active life despite the struggles. I used to be very active before dealing with chronic illness , I have hope to get back to that someday.

  • Hi anonymous I have just joined group and like you wondered if anyone else has been going through what I am, I  had non Hodgkin's lymphoma in 1988 and over the years have had many other health problems including a brain tumour and  often wondered if all what health issues I've had and have are due to all the treatment's I had as a child, I have at the moment tumours on my parathyroid and waiting for surgery and have been seeking help in trying to get answers regarding late effects of cancer treatments with no luck as yet, I hope you are well and thanks for reaching out and sharing.

  • Hi never posted on this site but read though this feed and so many things are relatable and I thought I was on my own!

I had ALL when I was 10 in 2004 and had chemotherapy treatment till around 14. I have a list of issues that have slowly grown as I am getting into adulthood (26 now). I too suffer from memory issues but mine seem to be long term memory as well as spacing out throughout the day. I suffer from anxiety which I take propanarol for and aspects of PTSD. I also have been to the doctors several times due to my iron always being on the low end of the "normal" scale even when I was put on high grade iron tables. Because of this I get fatigued and bruise easily which when being a cancer survivor makes me unsettled.

I have tried looking into long effects online but there is hardly any resources. I've felt so alone with these issues but it's comforting reading all your posts as I don't know anyone who is a childhood survivor so have felt very alone with my thoughts and worries.

I was released when I was around 18 and since then I've had no support on my health and trying to get gps to understand why I'm worried or asking for a blood test is a constant struggle.

If anyone wants to chat or anything I would love to talk more about your experiences

    Hannah :)

  • Hi,

I had treatment for ALL back in the 1980s and would be happy to talk to anyone about long-term effects. I've had a quite obscure list of them and from my personal experience, I have found that the Cancer doctors I was under were very ignorant and unprofessional when I brought up issues that were having a huge impact on my quality of life. I can totally understand how it feels when you are asking for someone's help because, for me, I was a child and have no knowledge of what was done or the side effects. Feel free to add me as a friend and drop me a message.

  • Hi, I know you posted this a while back but I'm sorry to hear you've suffered from the effects so much , I hope you are doing better now and have some answers.

  • Hi Hannah, Sorry I've only just seen your comment, I've only just logged in here after months of not being on here.

I noticed you had chemo for a particulary long time, I had it for a bit over 2 years and I hear that's usually around the ammount of time for ALL, I'm not supprised your particualry suffering from long term effects , especially after having it for such an ammount of time.

I think the issues with your long term memory are probably part of your ptsd also, I've suffered with it myself so have read quite a bit about it over the years as well as the after effects of the chemo as I felt very alone with it. I have managed to find some good info but yes there isn't a huge ammount.

Sorry to hear you didn't recieve much support afterwards, were you never refered to aftercare? I was but don't go much at all these days. Usually my doctors are quite good if I do have some new symptoms they do usually take my history into account although ive had some less positive expereinces too.

Be happy to hear back from you, good to conect to others , espcially around my age (Im 26) who had the same type as me. Feel free to inbox me anytime if you want to chat some more or just respond here. :)
