Just not sure

I was diagnosed with breast cancer last Dec.  I had the operation followed by 4 weeks of radiotherapy.  I am still finding things very difficult. No one has actually told me if I'm cancer free now and it's playing mind games with me now. Does anyone have any thoughts?

  • Hi Mandy P,

I'm glad that you were able to have treatment for your breast cancer although I'm sorry you're still finding things difficult having through so much already. Have you discussed your concerns with your medical team or your GP? If not maybe you could contact them and have a chat about where you stand now. You could also call our cancer nurses next week to discuss you situation as well if you like? You can call them for free from a UK landline Monday - Friday between 9a.m-5p.m.

Also many members on the forum who have gone through treatment and come out the other side not knowing if they are cancer free will really understand the situation you're in and hopefully they will pop by soon to offer their support and share their experiences with you.

    All the best,

  • I was diagnosed last Nov, had surgery , chemo and radiotherapy   and I feel the same , no one has actually told me I'm cancer free now. I feel it would be nice to talk to people that have gone through the same experience

  • I don't think anyone can be certain the cancer won't come back - if you have checkups they just show you have no evidence of disease at that time. If it is going to come back you will get symptoms such as a new lump, puckering of the skin round the site of the original op, pain in the back or somewhere else. Most people get recurrences or spread to other parts of the body in the first two years after diagnosis but it can come back years later.

I was anxious for years but I don't bother now as I'm now alive 13 years later. I had a small tumour just under 2cm, no spread to lymph nodes, low grade cancer and took tamoxifen for a few years. The grade and size of cancer I had was less likely to spread than more aggressive kinds. I was 47 when I found my lump I am now 61. If you don't have lymph nodes involved you have a good chance it won't have spread anywhere. I imagine that's the case with  you as you don't say you had chemo.

  • That is so resuring to hear auntie j. I don't get my check up until Jan but that just seems so far away. I'm sure I'm worrying for nothing. Thanks for your help.
