The anti-climax after taking off a wig

Hello everyone:) I am 14 years old and I got the all clear from Cancer in December. Just something that always bothers me: the anti-climax and the almost disappointment after you take your wig off. I've been cancer free for a few months and my hair is growing very fast but I hate it at the length it is now. I feel so much better about myself while wearing a wig, I feel I look awesome and yeah! But when I get home and I take it off, I honestly just want to cry. That reminder that your hair won't be that length for some time makes me so upset. Just want to know how you guys deal/dealt with this, please I don't want to hear the usual "it'll grow back faster than you think" etc, I've lost all my self confidence and am just finding it so hard:/

  • Hi cbh

Ok your not going to like this but believe me speaking from experience your hair will grow back quickly.

I remember the first time I stopped wearing my wig/ hat my friends all said wow your hair has grown quickly and you really suit it short.

It really was a big thing for me (59 at the time) to stop wearing the wig so I can imagine what you are going through.

I know its hard but hold your head up take control and look yourself in the mirror and say this is only temporary it's a side effect and I have come through worse.

Be proud of what you have been through and survived, stand tall, carry on wearing your wig for as long as you need to but don't get upset about your hair. I did not want to get it cut once it got to long that it looked a mess but now 12 months on and 3 haircuts down being bald is a distant memory. Be good to yourself.

  • I am a lot older than you, but I felt the same.  I was sitting on the beach with my wig on and quite uncomfortable, when a friend, who had gone through the same, said just take it off.  I thought O.K. whatever!!  At first I felt very strange, but soon got used to it.  The next day I went back into school, a few looks, but after that people did not even notice.  I was also told it would grow back faster with daylight on it, it sure did.

    Take care Diane xxxx

  • yeah I get what you mean! thank you:)
