Tongue cancer Eleven years ago

Hi everybody

I have come on this forum before and got involved with a number of project with cancer so I apologise for that.

All I have to say that I am eleven years away from Tongue cancer and my life could not be better.

The tumour was removed from the tip of my tongue and it was not easy for the first two years but I had a

brilliant surgeon in Guy's. hospital wwho understood all my problems and helped me all this years to cope

with my ups and downs.    This year we celebrated Cancer survival day by organising a fashion show.   My

tongue and areas around the treated area is delicate from one to time but I am coping well.   I have to say that

it was not easy but I have come through it.   My input was 80% by doing a lot of exercise and eat healthy.

I wish you all a Happy Christmas and New year.

  • I so agree with the eating healthy bit. you say that 80% input was yours, because of this. Could I ask you what sort of changes you did make to your diet please? Personally I have changed my diet for the better (not that it was ever bad and I never smoked). I do believe it imortant to give up sugar if possible.

    keep healthy!

  • So good to hear you are doing well Imim.

I eat healthy now (apart from today and yesterday):p

    Merry christmas to you.

           Hi there

    Good to hear from you.

You are right   it was me who had taken the part in the fashion show.

It would be nice to see you when you come for your next appointment in Guy's for a coffee.

I am there most of the days so let me know if we can meet.

    Lots to talk about.

    Best wishes

  • Hi there

I was 55 when I was diagonised with tongue cancer with the most complex medical history including

type one diabetes.    I started with physical exercise by learning cycling for the first few months and

at the same time stoped eating sugary food completely.    It was not easy but I concentrated on green

vegetables and fish for the first three years while cycling upto 15 to 20 after a year.    I can go on and on but when I finished my first five years I was surprised as much as doctors that I made it and got out of woods.

I now eat mainly fish chicken and green vegetable not to say I do eat other food when I wish to but that is on rare occassions.   I think combination of food and diet is the key to overcome any medical condition.

I have never smoked in my life but there you are.

    Best wishes

  • thanks so much for replying!

I agree with all you say, and pleased for confirmation. I hope many people read your post. good food is the key. even in tandem with chemotherapy.

my oncologist disagreed when I said food played a big part in recovery, (but doctors only get one hour nutrition in 4 years study!) but he did agree that giving up sugar was brilliant, and actually said 'that's why you are so nice and slim!' I'm not slim enough, but I love him for saying it !!! he also encouraged exercise, but I already go to 6 ballet classes a week. luckily he didn't think either radiotherapy or chemotherapy was useful for my rare scalp tumour, as it has been surgically removed, and hasn't spread yet. but no idea how I got it in the first place - maybe as simple as too much sugary food?

it makes you wonder how you got tongue cancer, but never smoked!

glad to hear you are doing so well by eating well. that's what they say to me, and they no longer consider I might die, having originally been told I may not make the 5 year survival.

happy Christmas and new year to you and yours
