Life after cancer all clear

I had breast cancer I’m through it and the radiotherapy . What I want to know is my boob still sore and looks and feels so different under the scare tissue it feels lumpy just all so different I really don’t like looking at it tbh and just want to know if this is normal and I’m not going mad with worry about what’s happening inside my boob still sore. Certain sensations under my arm . It would just be nice to know someone else feels like me and I’m not on my own Thank you x

  • Hello Myhappyplace,

I am glad to hear that your surgery and radiotherapy are now behind you. Breast cancer doesn't usually cause pain, but you have had serious surgery and it takes some time for the tissue under the surface to heal properly. If you had some lymph nodes removed, you will find that your underarm also takes some time to heal and the area can be uncomfortable. How long ago is it since you had your cancer?

I had 2 bouts of breast cancer, within a year of each other. I had a lumpectomy first time around and a double mastectomy for the second bout. It took a few years for the redness around the scars to settle completely and my breasts then looked so much better. Do you have any further appointments to see your consultant? If so, you can mention how you feel about the appearance and sensations, but all sounds to be as expected.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Make sure to write down all of your concerns before your appointment. This way you won't forget anything important. Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on.

  • Hi Myhappyplace,  Sorry to hear about your cancer diagnosis.  I had lumpectomy, sentinel node biopsy, chemo radiotherapy and tamoxifen/letrazole 12 years ago.  I still get pain in the breast and it still feels hard and lumpy.  It is also a different colour (almost like bruising).  I think this is normal.  I think breast care nurse said get used to the look and feel of the breast so that in future you will know if it feels different.  I think this is normal to have some pain, but always best to get it checked out.  Good luck with your appointment.  You are not alone.

  • Hi Myhappyplace,

I am sorry to hear that you haven't heard back from your cancer nurse. This is unusual. Did you leave a message with your phone details? The nurses are busy people and it is not always easy to reach them straight away.  I have found that if I leave a message, they usually get back to me fairly quickly. When you come back from holiday, why not try again?

I hope that you are recovering well from your knee operation - I have had both of my knees replaced and found that my recouperation took quite some time. My  anxiety always did increase before an annual review, but I hope that all goes well for you then. I hope that you have a lovely holiday.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.
    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
