After Diep Reconstruction

I haven’t posted much on here since my right breast masectomy in 2019. 2020 I had chemotherapy followed by radiotherapy. Recovering from that and then Covid hit. After a year being flat on one side I looked into having reconstruction.
I decided on Diep flap reconstruction rather than implants. Diep  uses your own tissue in my case from the tummy. I waited a year and a half for the surgery. I was fortunate that a very good hospital for this kind of surgery was an hour away.
The surgery was major, 8 1/2 hours. The first couple of weeks was tough recovering from the anaesthesia. I was cut from hip to hip bikini line and the flap from my tummy was used to recreate the new breast. The Diep breast is connected to the blood vessels and my surgery was a success. I also had my left breast reduced. I was very happy when I awoke to have two breasts. No more prothesis. For 7 weeks I wore compression bra and pants, then dressings removed and now 8 weeks over I’m massaging my scars with bio oil. I am hoping to start swimming  next week. It’s been a long road but I feel I have been put back together and it has been good for my self confidence. In a few months I will have a 3d nipple tattoo. This is my story if anyone is interested!

  • Thank you for replying. I have joined the FB group Diep reconstruction UK which has been supportive for ladies choosing the Diep route

  • Hi

It was great to read your reconstruction went well. How long is it since you had the surgery and are things still going well.

I'm at the stage where I've been to see the plastic surgeon and he suggested the diep type reconstruction. Although there is a waiting list of 12 months.

Now I'm feeling anxious after speaking to.my Dad, one of his friends, daughter also had the diep at same hospital I will be having mine done. Afterwards she couldn't stand up properly. Sadly 8 month after her.op cancer took her.

So now I'm feeling anxious about the reconstruction rather than looking forward to it. It didn't help when jokingly said more battle scars to him and his response was well unfortunately that's the price you pay....(he took a slight pause) for.vanity.

This is my second time with cancer first I had part of.my tongue removed and lymph nodes taken. Luckily the lymph nodes were clear so I didn't need chemo or. radiation. 5 years later around April I got the ok I was all clear. 8 months down the road I found a lump in my right breast same side as previous cancer but both unrelated. So along with a puckered scar from masectomy, I have a scar from under my right ear to middle of my throat. Which has faded and blends into my neckline or as my son said to me at the time it blends in with the rest of your wrinkles. Typical cheeky 13 year old haha he's now almost 22.
