Different brands of Letrozole

I was just looking for feedback on how people are coping with their Letrozole tablet side effects please. I started with Sun pharmaceutical brand that hospital supplied and feel ok no side effects. On asking docs for repeat prescription and asking chemist for same brand they can't get hold of it so supplied Accord brand. Does anyone have any feedback to when if any side effects kick in. I have just got used to taking tablets and wanted to stay on same ones really. Thanks

  • Hi GillMH,

I started on Accord approx 4 weeks ago and noticed that metallic taste in mouth in last week but also in the last few days have started with terrible aches in legs and hips. I am quite active so know it's not a change in excercise or anything. I had to put a heat rub on last night to get to sleep. I thought here we go now. Is the side effects starting!

After reading your reply and reading others I heard Cipla, so nipped into a local well known chemist today (up North) to see if they could get these if I got docs to write the brand on prescription. After saying they had seen them then her going to have a word with pharmacist, came back and said sorry can't get these for you.  Will try asking round now at other chemists.
I also mentioned the terrible pain in legs and pharmacist said this is nothing to do with the brands. ( trying to fob me off I think) ! Will try my usual chemist on Monday.

  • Hi. I started on anastrozole 3 and a half years ago and the side effects almost finished me off. As it was the pandemic and hospital appointments weren't happening I thought this was the norm. It started after about 3 months the joint and muscle pain, hot sweats, insomnia were unbearable. I got up the stairs at night by hanging on to the spindles. I couldn't walk the dog or anything else much for that matter. My oncologist listened at my first meet 17 months after surgery and just said oh that is the medication. I finally got some relief two years ago when a call for my routine mammogram I was asked was everything ok. As a result of speaking  to the receptionist my breast care nurse took me off the tablets and replaced these with LETROZOLE. She did say that as these are a member of the same tablet family I could still get side effects. I do but more tolerable. The pain isn't as aggressive, hot sweats are constant and my hair resembles a perm most mornings due to being wet with sweat. It's on off with the bed covers all night and broken sleep each night as opposed to hours of insomnia. The insomnia alone left me exhausted every morning. Pain has progressed in my hands and on researching this it can be attributed to this medication, which my pharmacist agreed with. I realise the side effects of this medication will likely range from none to severe, as I have read where patients have come off it as they were in so much pain. I can relate to this as initially I would describe it as debilitating. My nurse said it was debilitating arthralgia. I had a very positive experience with all the breast care professionals but at no point did anyone mention these side effects. Yes they are in the little leaflet in your tablet box, but I wasn't prepared for it. Life is more bearable due to listening to my body. If I do too much I suffer for a few days after. It's a bit at a time and what doesn't get done, well that's ok.

Hi there, don’t know if this will help , I’m on Letrozole ( poison I call it) and have had nearly every side effect listed. Bone pain, weight gain, hair loss , high blood pressure , could go on but won’t bore you to death! Anyway the bone pain is much better since taking Magnesium 150mgs morning & night ( check with your doc first) I take Lamberts make . I also take Pilfood for hair loss, Calcium ( at lunchtime as it counteracts the magnesium ) , Vitamin B for the hair loss . I really notice the difference if I don’t take the Magnesium , my joints & bone pain get worse. I’m also on Citalopram for hot flushes( they are a mild antidepressant but work for flushes) . Hope this helps xx

Hi. Thanks for the information. My hair was fine until I changed to Letrozole, now it's very thin on top. I have a diet high in calcium so take vit D in winter to help with absorbing this. I'll look into vit b for my hair as I was upset as it was so thick and was my crowning glory! Again I feel we have to plough through our side effects to see if letrozole is the cause then remedy ourselves or go to our GP.

Hi Shelie 7, I know you posted mths ago about letrazole. I've been taking it for 3yrs now, and  I've has different brands the worst one for me was Cipllia. I take Accord Brand now, its not great I had so many symptoms at the start of taking it,joint pain, muscle aches and pain. I also developed trigger thumb, which can be a side effect ,I had that for over a year,as well as plantas  fasciitis  in my feet. Those have now gone, but I still.get pains,in joints and muscles,,and both my shoulders  hurt  can't put my arms  behind  my back to scratch it lol. I've recently started getting hot sweats ,which I didnt get at start. But if it helps.stop the cancer coming back I'll continue and soldier on. I'm 66,I will be 67 in November this year. I've been lucky so far getting my Accord brand,as I asked my doctors to head my prescription at the top ...Accord Brand Only,I won't take any others  as just about tolerate this one and dont want to risk taking any other brands incase my side effects are worse,i couldn't  risk getting trigger thumb again,as that was awful and psinfull. I think with any  letrazole ,you have to find one you can tolerate, and what my doctors have done for me is give me two lots at a time,u also have bern prescribed Adcall tutti fruti flavour ,and thst helps with my calcium and bones. Also prescribed ibubrofen gell,to help with my pain,as I allready have degenerative atheritus, which I've had scince age 18. Try to stick  with a  letrazole Brand you find you can tolerate, I wish you good luck  in your moving on journey.
