Hair texture after chemotherapy

A year on from chemotherapy and I am wondering whether my shoulder length hair will still have the potential to become heavier and feel less soft as it was pre-treatment. I am in my early 60s.

Really worried.

Thank you.

  • Hello Blossom_tree

It's not uncommon for hair to regrow as a different colour and/or texture following chemotherapy treatment and can be fragile. For lots of people, it also grows back softer than before. You can read about hair loss and cancer drugs on our website here

Hopefully some of our members who have had hair loss due to chemotherapy will post to share their experiences with you. Do chat with your hairdresser about the best way to care for your hair and what products they may recommend.

  • I am 70 I had fine but thick hair before chemo. It grew back silver so gave up with highlights and use a Josh Wood wash sometimes to put a bit of warmth in. It's not as thick as before but very soft and shiny. I took a hair, vitamin for a while and use only organic shampoos and conditioners. Are you losing hair? I'm on Anastrazole hormone treatment which I believe can make hair thinner

  • I'm 31 and prior to my chemotherapy I had thin, flat, dull hair that I would always just brush over to the side as a matter of course.

I now look like an incarnation of Bob Ross!

    all the best

  • Hi,

Do you mind if I ask how long after chemo your hair is still curly please?

I finished at the end of November 2021 and my hair came back darker and curly but I've heard people say it will go back to how it was before but I kind of like the curls!

    Thanks :)

  • Hi, I'm on my fourth year of remission and not under any treatment or taking any medication. I am 67 and my hair used to be thick. On the first year after treatment, it grew back wavy. Now, I noticed it is thinning and the texture is soft and fragile. I would like to ask if it is safe to take Minoxidil or if anyone has experience taking it or any other treatment to help with the thinning. Thank you.

  • Hi Rainbow265,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. It would be a good idea to speak to our nurses about this as they should be able to advise. If you'd like to do this, you can either post in the 'Ask the Nurses' section of this forum, or you can call freephone 0808 800 4040 (Monday-Friday, 9-5).

And if others have similar experience to share then hopefully you'll get more replies soon.

    Best wishes,
