Tamoxifen

I have been on Tamoxifen for two years and have horrendous 0ain and cramps in my thighs and gained belly fat. I have had one problem after the other including type 2 diabetes and hypothyroidism. Before all this i was a healthy and very fit and active person, now I can't do a quarter of what i did before and even that is with pain and exhausts me. My care team keep telling me it nothing to do with Tamoxifen but its too big a coincidence that its all started since taking Tamoxifen. I feel like just stopping myself, during Covid I have found it so hard to really talk to anyone about it all. Has anyone else had these problems and stopped the Tamoxifen, did it improve things.

  • Hello

I was not on Tamoxifen but Anastrozole and like you I was strong and healthy at time of diagnosis.   I had multiple, repeating, painful and compounding in intensity ill effects that were not recognised by my medical professionals.    It transpired that I had extra sensitivity to changes of brand.     After 2 years and 2 months I rang Breast Cancer Now - Someone Like Me, assessed my own situation  then decided to stop.    That was 7 years ago.  Have you spoken to Maggies?   Hope this may help.      X

    Hello Again

May I suggest that you contact your Oncologist.  I have just remembered that my Oncologist was the missing link as my hospital was short of them in 2012  Don't let this go on too long.     All Good Wishes for 2022.

  • Hi I was prescribed for tamoxifen for 5 years and all of the above by year 3 I could hardly walk with joint pain but was prescribed with naproxen which helped immensely and could do most activities so please contact your gp before it gets too bad, it was not known as side affect 10 years ago but now I understand it is, but painkillers do help a lot and the benefits are so much worthwhile x

  • Hello,

I am on Anastrazole and at first had aching joints and fatigue. That could also be caused by chemo and radiotherapy. My team did suggest Tamoxifen but I decided to stay with Anastrazole. Is it the lack of oestrogen that causes the side effects? Mine has seemed to have calmed down after 1 1/2 years and I'm feeling quite well, although sleepless nights is another factor and so it goes on. I know some ladies stop the medication and I find that brave. My Consultant has told me there is a better chance of not getting secondaries by staying on the meds so it is a big decision and  personal. Whatever you decide I hope you feel better

    Best wishes
