Scared about returning to work

I was diagnosed with CNS Lymphoma in April 2020. 2 months in hospital for chemo then kidney failure caused by the actual chemo. 3 days after discharge I was rushed back in to hospital with Neutropenic Sepsis. All told I was in hospital for 3 months with a 3 day home in between. My latest MRI scan was showing very good progress. I have started thinking about returning to work in some role. I have always loved working but the thought of it is terrifying me. I am weirdly hoping my Oncologist will say I am not ready for work yet. Is this a normal reaction??

  • Hello Jarrowlad,

so there you are, bowling along nicely with life and then you get hit by a succession of really heavy duty conditions. If that did not pull away at your previously sound foundations, what else would?.No surprise then that you have unleashed anxiety into your life, which will take some time to subside as you regain trust that your health improvement into the future. Its only natural after events like you have endured to question everything within your life,so l think your feelings are entirely normal, but will improve as the answers to your questions increasingly come back as positive as your health improves,

Just be prepared to give yourself that time that you need,

                                                                                                                    David

  • Thank you for taking your time to read my post. Most other people here are in a worse situation than me. I actually feel embarrassed with my post but sometimes a bit of advice from people who have also been in my shoes is a huge help.

    Thank you again

  • Hi Jarrowlad

I have just posted about getting back to work and then noticed your post. Did you manage ok? Hope you did, I've not really any choice as I work in a small family business but finding it really hard to concentrate on work. Did anything help you forget your situation or did it just happen naturally eventually? Mental health in these situations is sometimes just as important as our physical health.

All the best and hope your health has been good, considering.

  • Hi Friend,

I did not get back to work yet. My kidneys were quite badly damaged during my chemotherapy and have started to play up a bit lately. To be honest with you, knowing that I won't be going back to work just yet is a mix of disappointment and relief.

I work/worked as a driver for a large car hire company for almost 20 years and as my lymphoma was cerebral I have had my driving licence revoked for a minimum of 24 months. It doesn't help that I have had very little contact with my employer to work out where I stand for when I do go back.

I am sure things will end up the way they are meant to be.

All the best to you too and stay safe. I hope you have had your first vaccine and feeling as good as possible.

    Steve
