Migraine

Diagnosis: High grade Non-Hodgkinson Lymphoma

Treatment: R-CHOP chemotherapy (had 1 session)

Problem: Horrendous migraine!

Just thought I would share my experience ans see if anyone has any suggested remedies.

One week after my first chemo session I had the most horrendous migraine which in the evening led to me passing out and being taken to A&E in an ambulance. Liquid morphine didn't touch it but after 3 days it finally subsided although I'm left with a very woozy head.

I saw a post which recommended rubbing lavender oil and sweet almond oil into temples so I will try that, but any other suggestions welcome.

  • Hi F10. Welcome to the forum.

I am not a doctor but my wife gets migraines (and I get the occasional one, also).

There are effective meds that your GP can give you that can help prevent attacks, and shorten them when they appear.  I suggest you discuss this episode with your GP.

My wife is on a low dose of Amitriptyline tablets (one half of a 10mg tablet).  In higher doses, these are actually an antidepressant, but this low dose is sufficient to help my wife ward off migraines.

When an attack occurs, she also takes an Almotriptan 12.5mg tablet.  She did try Zolmitriptan (Zomig) but she had a bad reaction to it.  However, there are many people who find Zomig very effective.

With migraines, if you act at the first sign (usually visual disturbances) then you have a better chance of warding it off.  Often, a jolt of caffeine (coca cola, coffee) plus over-the-counter painkillers, plus a triptan tablet (if you have any) will cut short an attack. Herbal remedies are unlikely to do any harm, but I haven't found any that are really effective for a migraine (except for caffeine).

I should emphasise that I'm not a doctor and you need to discuss with your GP what remedies to take if you get another attack.  I suggest it's best to do it soon so that you're ready just in case the dreaded mig fairy strikes again.
