Practical Matters

Hubby has a pre op assessment coming up on !st October for prostate cancer.

We haven't got a date for surgery yet but I'm already wondering about what he will need when he comes home. He is to have a catheter fitted, which underwear is best and are jogging bottoms easier, also when the catheter is removed are pads better than pullups.

I know these are all minor details but I'm trying to get everything straight in my mind before the actual surgery.

To be honest I just want it over with now.

  • Sounds like fun . Thanks again for the info. you have been a great help. I was thinking of senakot !!!

  • Hi me again.

We are now on the Fybogel, nothing happening as yet . My next query is did you have a trial without catheter or not. We are going with just taking the catheter out and being sent home. We will then get a phone call to check how we are doing.

I hope you don’t mind me picking your brains but you have been so helpful.

To be honest we are not doing too badly except for the bowel thing which is worrying him a bit.

Thanks once again for all your advice.

  • I had a thought earlier today. Has your husband been taking any painkillers with codeine?  That can cause constipation.  How long has it been since he last went?  If it's more than a week then maybe he needs to see the GP.

I didn't have a trial - two weeks to the day after the op, the catheter was removed. I had to hang around the hospital drinking coffee and trying to pass water for a couple of hours until they were happy that I actually could pee ok.

However, after the major replumbing job of a prostatectomy, nothing felt right at all.  I kept getting signals from my bladder that I needed to pee, but would pass nothing more than a drop or two.  I barely slept that night because I was constantly running to the loo, with nothing much happening.

Still, after a fairly short time, everything felt back to the normal.  My bladder stopped sending false signals and once again I could recognise when it needed emptying.

I'm happy to keep answering the questions for as long as you want to keep asking them.  That's why I'm here and also why I'm involved with my local prostate group.

  • Thank you once again. We had a slight bowel motion so things are on the move . As for the catheter, we have been told the procedure takes 20 mins. It’s taken out then we are told what to expect then sent home. We are then phoned in the evening to see how we are getting on.

Another part of the unwanted adventure but we are OK..

    Thanks for all your help.
