Cancer diagnosis = colleagues blank me!

I'm very much an out going strong positive person and was diagnosed with breast cancer during the Easter holidays. When I returned to work and told colleagues, the attitude and interaction of some people with me has left me shocked and saddened. They've completely blanked me and walked past me. They will only say hello if I say it first. I've been told that I've not been considered for a promotion because I can't guarantee that I will be back to work full time in September as I will be undergoing radiotherapy treatment during August and could be on a phased return - that's not good enough!

I feel like screaming and shouting from the rafters that I didn't ask to get cancer and reminding them that I was so lucky I was called for an early mammogram that caught the cancer in the first place, but what good would it do!

Has anyone else experienced this horrible divide of people literally cutting you off overnight and how did you deal with it?

Thank you.

  • Hi there ...

Join the club ... think most of us have found out who our friends are .. it's sad but seems part of this journey... the good part is those that snub you.. then just turn around and don't give them another thought .. what goes around comes around .. maybe one day they will be touched by cancer and remember how they acted ..

There are some, I must say, just so scared of saying something wrong, so they say nothing , not realising that hurts more .. some just live in their own world , and don't care .. some though really come through and support , where you didn't expect it ..

There are rules now in the workplace where they have to accommodate you and your appointments and treatment ... and adapting your job when you go back ... with cancer ... so your bosses need to be aware ..

Those that I'd helped through life who stayed away with not even a text ... are out of my life now ... and those that really helped , I will repay their kindness 10 fold ... but you can always find a shoulder to lean on here .. or you can vent .. or just chat ... your not alone ...  Chrissie x
