My husband has stage 4 cancer. He would like to go on a river cruise whilst still can. Anyone got any idea, roughly, about insurance costs? Really don't want to get official quotes, and related phonescalls, just want to know if realistic! Thanks.

  • Hi Jan,

I saw that you were looking for information about insurance costs so just wanted to let you know we have a section about travel insurance on our website here if you want to have a look. Other members here have also been in this predicament when thinking about going on holiday so hopefully some of them will reply soon to offer their advice and recommendations.

I hope you're able to find a price that is right for you and are able to go on the river cruise. It sounds lovely :)

  • Hi Jan There are a few companies that cover travel if you have cancer but the costs vary and can be very expensive depending on if you have finished your treatment and when. Some wont cover you until 6 months from your last treatment. If you look up Travel Insurance on this site you will find some previous discussions with recommendations. I got a quote from saga and it was really expensive. I have been on several holidays and have kept my annual cover as it covers me for cycling but they do not cover me for cancer so I have been taking the risk of not having to cancel a holiday or being ill during. Not a good idea for everyone depends on your financial circumstances and in my case the insurance quote was almost the same as the holiday so nothing to lose.

  • Ok so have contacted one specialist company so far. If he has finished treatment, blood levels are ok and dr says fit to travel insurance between £800-£1000! This seems crazy! Friends suggest going without insurance but I can't. Will keep searching!

  • Hi Janbuck, We were quoted the same to go to Kephalonia for one week, my husband refused to pay it. I trawled around gathering information and became aware that the E111 card covers us for all treatment in Europe, including emergency cancer care. I'm not advising you to go without insurance , that is a decision only you can make , but we have been 3 times now, just with the E111 card. Good luck , hope you get away and have a wonderful holiday.
  • Thanks. I will look at this. Too much of a control freak to go without insurance but will search for a better deal!
  • I have just come back from a weeks cruise off croatia and I insured with Eurotunnel for £24 - I could scarcely believe it as I am in my 70s and have stage 4 uterine cancer, osteoporosis and COPD.  The stipulations were that I had not been described as terminal (fortunately my oncologist never uses this word), was currently stable, holidaying in Europe and that my GP if subsequently contacted would agree that I was fit to travel.  I found their online site really difficult to follow so phoned instead.  I was told that the company did not need to know my medical history.   If  this sounds appropriate for your husband it's really worthwhile giving it a go but I should add that I have no experience of claiming from them.

Good luck and I hope you have a lovely time.
