Holiday Insurance

Forgive me if this is not the correct place to ask this question but it was the first place I thought of ......

My dad was given good news today, that he is in remission.  As such he asked his doctor about being able to go on holiday and she said she could not see why not.

Myself and my husband are going to Tenerife at the end of February and we were hoping my mum and dad could join us if he received good news today.  However, his usual travel insurer won't insure him and staysure want nearly £900 for a 10 day holiday.

I was just wondering if anybody else has had a similar experience and was able to get a reasonable travel insurance quote.  Many thanks in advance xx

  • Hi,

If you click on Search Forum and type "travel insurance" or "holiday insurance" into the search box, you should get back several message threads on the topic.

It is expensive though, I've found it is only about 50% more to get 12 months cover as it is to buy 10 days cover. Daft isn't it.

    Best wishes

  • Thanks Dave I'll have a look.

    Best wishes.

  • Hi,

I had a good price from:

    http://www.insurancewith.com

So have family members. It depends on what type etc.

Insurancewith was founded in 2007, when insurance professional Fiona Macrae was unable to find travel insurance at a reasonable price which also covered her cancer diagnosis. She founded Insurancewith with the aim of providing everyone with a medical condition with a fair and affordable travel insurance policy to cover their upcoming holidays. You can read more about Fiona’s story here.

    Hope it helps.

  • Hello Libertybelle246,

Tenerife sounds like a very exciting destination! I am pleased to see you have received some good tips already from our members. Cancer Chat is definitely the right place to ask this kind of question and you will find this has been discussed many times before here - so I would do what Dave suggested and do a forum search for 'travel insurance' and read past threads on this.

We also have some information on our website on travel insurance which may be useful to you. You can find out more about this here.

    I hope this helps!

    Best wishes,

  • Hi there

try "insure with" I found them very reasonable

  • Hi I was going on holiday to Austria after I was given the good news and put in remission. My current insurer would continue to insure me (12 month policy) but would not cover me for cancer so if I had to cancel or was ill on holiday due to cancer I would not be covered they would however continue to cover me for anything else. I checked several insurers and the cost was so high that we took the risk to travel without cover for cancer. One quote was for more than the holiday cost. This is not advisable for everyone and depends where you are going but check what you European health card offers for Tenerife. Funny thing was my husband became ill during the holiday (gastric bug) and had to go to the doctors and was covered. Have a great holiday.
  • Just read the small print whoever you decide go with.

Some of them quietly exclude your pre-existing conditions but cover you for everything else. In other words anything related (even indirectly) to your cancer is not insured. Twice I have almost been caught out by this trick.

As they say on all the Consumer Rights TV Programmes "If it seems to good to be true, it probably is!"

    Cheers

  • Hi Katie and Vatch,

I've just got a quote from InsureWith and the premiums seem very reasonable. Some of the maximum amounts covered are lower than my current policy, but the zero excess makes up for this.

I'll definitely give them a go when I renew my annual insurance in April.

    Thanks
    Dave

  • Hi, I have incurable breast cancer and went abroad on holiday twice last year. I was insured by 'Insure with'. They were very reasonable. Jimmys mum
  • The company I used last year have hiked their premiums up and so far no-one else will give me an online quote. As soon as I enter Anxiety/Depression the shutters come down and they tell me to talk to a human underwriter for a specialist quote. Ironically the Cancer side of things hasn't been a problem (apart from high premiums of course). They all give a discount for getting an online quote, so I'm expecting another price hike for getting a quote by phone.

Has anyone tried Talk to Tim - I tripped over their site today and wondered whether they were any good. I've tried all the usual outlets including InsureWith over the course of this afternoon but so far not had any luck. I guess I should prepare for a mammoth Telethon tomorrow surrounded by all our medical history and current medications.

    Thanks

    Dave
