Travel Insurance - a horror story

I've just read this awful story on the BBC website which reminds us all of the need to make sure we list everything we've ever suffered from on Travel Insurance applications, however long ago or irrelevant these may seem.

I'll not say what my feelings are about this particular company as this might breach the rules of the forum, but my sympathies are obviously with the family involved.

thanks for bringing it to our attention, indeed this is a very good reminder to us all!!

I too will keep my feelings about this companies behaviour in respect of breaching any rules.  And also send my sympathies to the family involved.

  • Hi Dave

As JB has said this is a timely reminder especially with the holiday season getting into full swing. Whilst this company has attracted much bad publicity, they are not alone in enforcing their terms and conditions to the letter. I personally have added them to my blacklist. You have pointed out before to read the all the small print and to declare all your health problems and to make sure it covers everything required. For those of us with cancer this is especially relevant when trying to keep the costs of a trip down. Cheapest isn't always best and neither is the most expensive. Make sure your EHIC card is up to date before you go. You can renew it online. I didn't bother with insurance on a recent trip abroad but was horrified on returning home to see my EHIC card was 3 months out of date. Kim

  • Hi Kim

thanks for the reminder!!! Omg I meant to do the EHIC card and have just kept putting it off because of one thing or another..... I better do this now as I've already booked my next holiday

Actually do you think this will still cover as after we eventually leave the EU?

    JB

  • Hi JB

Glad to be of help in reminding you.

Yes the EHIC card will continue to be used after we leave the EU, it covers the European Economic Area  EEA and Switzerland plus the 4 European Free Trade EFTA countries and is indepenent of the European Union. For example you can get treatment in say Greenland. I think it doesn't cover Guernsey in the Channel Islands, but might cover Jersey. UK also has reciprocal arrangements with Australia, New Zealand, Russia and some of the islands in the Carribean. However this is emergency treatment only if you need to see a GP or dentist you will have to pay. I've also heard of hospitals in the EHIC countries for example Spain refusing to accept the EHIC card, instead asking for a credit card or your insurance policy, so be warned and make sure you take insurance with you if your going far from home.  Kim

  • I've just applied for mine and read up a little on it, you translated it perfectly lol thanks very much, yes I did understand the part about insurance so will always make sure I have that too.  You've helped me tick a task off the list

    have a great evening

    JB

  • Hi Dave just read the story awful to think they had insurance , we can’t get any insurance do you know of any insurance company that will

  • There is a guide to insurance here on cruk, with a list of companies people on the forum have recommended:

    www.cancerresearchuk.org/.../travel-insurance

Several people on this forum have suggested insurancewith.com are worth considering. They do ask a lot of questions about what stage of disease and treatment you are at. I did an application and I think I had 54 questions but came out with a quote of around £130 I think for a week in Portugal. In the end I decided to call them when I am ready to buy as that way any doubts I had about the questions or my answers could be discussed with them and clarified. On their website they have a page specifically for cancer patients:

    www.insurancewith.com/.../

  • Hi,

Squire mentioned Insurewith who I have used recently and they paid up quickly after a non cancer related (theft from a vehicle) claim.

I've also used Essential Travel in the past - including a trip to India within days of ending chemo.

It's always worth posting a new query as the market is pretty changeable at the moment and far better than it was even 5 years ago. Someone on here probably has more recent information.

    Good luck!

    Dave
