Urgently need to make a will

We have been told my mum is in her final stages. She was diagnosed only a few months ago and was due to have chemo but pneuminia has infected her. So this is all a surprise.

It's her wish to have a will to make sure all the money she worked hard for is shared between us and not lost.

I really think time is of the essence now, I don't know how to go about this. She banks with HSBC and would prefer them to do it as she has no idea at the moment exactly how much money she has in her accounts and they would be able to get quicker acceas to that info.

She is in the hospital so someone would need to.come visit her. It's a simple will, eveything shared equal bbetween me and my brother.

Any advice appreciate x

  • Hi Easy_tiger

  • Im sorry to hear your mum has become ill so quickly and is very poorly now. Any solicitor will be able to visit your mum in hospital and write down her wishes to produce a will. And if you wish sort it out for you afterwards.

My father was too ill too make a will and died without making one. However it was not difficult to sort out, you have to apply to the court for probate, this gives you the authority to deal with your mums estate. The Age UK website has excellent resources on how to do all this. So if your mum is in this position just let it be.

In the meanwhile just enjoy having your mum, wishing your family lots of strength to deal with whats to come.

  • Hi easy tiger Sorry about your situation. If your Mum wants to leave everything to be split and the will is quite simple you can get a Will Form from the Post office or WH Smiths. Your mum can either write the will herself or you can complete the form for her. All she needs to put is that all her money (you don't need to put a figure), property and everything making up her estate is to be divided equally between - and then list the names and addresses. She then needs to name an executer (which can be you) sign the form in the presence of two witnesses (not in the will). The will form costs a few pounds and has notes and tips. I did this for my mum & it was quite easy.

  • Thanks everyone for your reply, it's all very helpful.

Does anyone know if nurses/doctors in the hospital are allowed to act as witnesses?

  • Hi

Nurses and doctors can witnesst his-it can be anyone, a friend, a colleague, as long as they're not in the will.  I'm not sure where in the country you are, but in Scotland, the children have a right to the estate (as well as the spouse) whether a will is made or not.
