advice please

I'm coming to terms with the words incurable, but on a practical level, do I have to notify my insurance company for the mortgage, I haven't got critical illness only paid off on death.

  • Hi Tonim,

I'm in a similar situation to you, so I'll be interested to see the responses you get.

When I was first diagnosed, I rang my insurance company to inform them, but was told this wasn't necessary. Fast forward two years and I'm incurable/ terminally ill. I have looked at the terms of my policy and have read that they will pay out on death or earlier if I have a year or less to live (obviously, this would have to be verified in writing by my doctor) and as yet, none of my medical team will 'commit' to timescales.

I've also been informed by my specialist nurse that I'm able to claim PIP (Personal Independence Payment) This is still being processed so I'm not sure how much it will be, but wondered if you were aware of this Government benefit?

I've been following your other threads too. Take care, Jo xx

  • Thanks for replying, Jo  meerkat@65. My policy sounds the same. I've been told its incurable and that's it.  My gp gave me the form for PIP and I rang the department on Friday as I wasn't sure I should send it off, but they assured me I should so I have.

My problem is actually seeing someone, I think because it started as breast cancer, then I had another primary in the bowel I'm under 2 departments and no lead, so I'm trying to muddle through.

Same with work, been off over a year now, don't know what to do for the best.  Think I will reread the policy again.then give them a call.

    Thanks Toni xx

  • Hello Tonym,

Thank you for posting a question. I am sorry to learn about your situation. One of the moderators felt we might be able to help.

As you pointed out, not only do you have to cope with your diagnosis, but  there are practical  things to think about  as well. This sort of thing can often add to the stress of the situation.

It seems like you have had some good advice from one of the forum users. As they suggested,  it is a good idea for you to  look into the possibility of receiving Personal Independence payments. As there are often extra costs associated with long term health problems, any money received can help with this.  I must admit that I do not really have a large amount of knowledge about life insurance, but it is fair to say that each individual policy will have slightly different rules and regulations. If you already have a life insurance policy that only pays out on death and does not cover for critical illness it is not usually necessary to disclose changes to your health but some policies will also pay out if the  holder of the policy is diagnosed with a terminal illness, so it is worth checking your policy to see what the situation is.

You are having to cope with a lot at the moment, but many people tell us that they feel more settled once they have sorted out their personal affairs.

    Kind regards,

    Jean
